Keeper96
Hi guys Sorry for double posting but my dads been putting ideas I to my head haha He's got me thinking about putting the r380 from the disco into my 90. Can someone tell me what's involved as I've heard so many different versions I'm starting yo have no idea of what fits with what. Disco-Ron
It will bolt pretty much straight in as long as you don't mind the gearlevers coming out through the centre seat. Also depends slightly what engine you're bolting it to. ...
Keeper96
I was planning on pitting it behind a 300tdi mounted forwards, I think more like a factory fitted 300tdi, surely this would put the box in the right position for the gear stick to come out somewhere near right? Am I right in believing I need yo use the disco cross member? Cheers Jamie
vulcan bomber
No, the disco doesnt have a remote housing on the top so the gear stick is behind the transfer box stick...
dangerous doug
There is a kit available from ashcrofts that allows you to bolt the remote housing into the disco box
tacr2man
You can use the discovery cross member (gearbox) just need to make a small cutout at the front top of the sideplates to clear web on the chassis HTSH
Keeper96
Thanks tac, does that put the box so that the gear levers come through in the lt77 position? Sorry for being a pain Cheers Jamie
Mo Murphy
Jamie, to make life easy for yourself use your current LT77 box. Keep an eye out for an LT77S box to fit at a later date as it had various improvements including a higher 5th gear better suited to the tdi. Maverik
Would totally agree with Mo on this one too, I did it last summer and the 300 went into an ex diesel turbo superbly, matched to the lt77 you get great gearing. I've got a 200 with a shorty r380 and the gearing is not the best, hence Just about too fit an overdrive. If I'd do it again I'd have stuck to a lt77. Much nicer set of gearing for all around use. ashtrans
Hi, The short R380 can come with the lower type 50A gearing as per pre 200 tdi or with the later higher gearing the same as the 200 tdi type 56A LT77 and the 300 tdi defender R380, these ratios are on our website in the ratio calculator, Dave
Maverik
Which leads to... make sure you double check your ratios before making a commitment... I have a feeling I've got a 50A which is super frustrating at highway speeds...!
Keeper96
Thanks guys, is there anyway of telling what box is in by the year of vehicle? Also I'll be fitting the transfer box from the discovery as well. I have the early type of lt77. If the the box I buy is the 56a and fit it along with the 1.2 transfer box that will give the same gearing as as an lt77s fitted with the 1.2 transfer box? Or am I way off the mark? Thanks Jamie
dangerous doug
In case your still pondering Disco selector undo the Alan key and remove the ball joint(put it in 4th before you do this) New adapter from Ashcroft in place Lt77 housing mated on a v8 discovery r380 box In total this took me 25mins to do, that includes me taking it back off to see that I hadn't removed the reverse selector t-piece thing which was stopping me select 24 and R. It doesn't come with instructions but it is that simple. I dare say that if your good with a lathe you could make your own
Keeper96
Cheer for that. We're picking the disco up on Tuesday then its just a case of sorting insurance out and getting holidays from work so I can go home to get this done. Orgasmic Farmer
Have a read of my thread where I fitted a Disco 300 and box into my early 110. I adopted a novel solution to keeping the dsico shifting gear (nice short throw) and improving the seating position at the same time (seats back and inboard slightly). I also have a nice flat centre console for phones and money etc and a well sound proofed gearbox tunnel. For me it is a win/win solution but there was quite a lot of engineering involved to do it tidy. A mate of mine fitted the same set up to his 110 by cutting a roung hole in the seat box for the sticks and then plonking some think rubber mats over the top!!!! Works, but looks a bit (lot!) gash. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=79226&hl=itch
