o_teunico
Hi, A friend needs more power for his 300 tdi Disco. We have been thinking about the idea of bigger intercooler, VNT and tuned IP, but this week a td5 Disco has arrived to local scrapyard. How easy will be a tdi to td5 swap? My LT85 gearbox needs an urgent rebuild. If we buy the td5 Disco, will the R380 from the td5 fit the "old" tdi engine? (that combo will go into my series). Advice and ideas are welcomed... Chicken Drumstick
When you say "needs more power" what do you mean? the Tdi should be sufficient for anything you'd want to do in a Disco. Wanting more power is something else and you can certainly perk up a Tdi quite easily. Get yourself an ETG gauge and just mildly tweak the injector pump. HP gains won't be massive, but it'll feel like you've gained 80hp+. Td5 swap is perfectly possible, but it won't be a simple bolt in job. You'll have to swap and customise quite a lot of bits. Unlike a Defender the Td5 was never fitted to a D1 or RRC. Honestly I suspect unless you are very good at this sort of thing, it's probably more hassle than it's worth. Re: the R380. Again yes, but you'll have to look into bellhousings and input shafts as there have been differences over the years. Just like swapping an R380 onto a 200Tdi. The Disco gear selector is also very different. Not sure how easy it is to convert it.
RedLineMike
I know someone who fitted a td5 auto into his previously 300tdi auto discovery, his findings were that it mostly fitted together without issue & the looms etc basically fitted into place,
o_teunico
At last we have just bought the Td5´s intercooler. Tunning a Tdi can be made without MoT people noticing it. A Td5 swap will need full engineer aproval. We are now looking for a VW Cracter VNT and have found in neigbour Portugal a cheap "super LDA" kit for tweaking the Bosch VE IP.
