DC_ Posted April 12, 2014 Share Posted April 12, 2014 Hello guys and gals, haven't posted in a while but just after the RRC gets another fresh MOT, the front heated screen keeps switching itself on. Once I turn it off it comes back on randomly. I've had the switch out and disconnected it, but the heated screen still comes on even with the switch off. Any thoughts? Doing my nut in ?? Snagger Posted April 13, 2014 Share Posted April 13, 2014 Well, it's a fairly large black relay on mine, and I expect that's consistent with older vehicles, so look for a relay double the height of a standard cube relay. Snagger Posted April 16, 2014 Share Posted April 16, 2014 You might have a system where a timer relay controls two power relays, so the timer uses little current. I'd suspect that one more than the two black ones - I think the regular relays tend to fail open or closed, not changing of their own accord. CwazyWabbit Posted April 16, 2014 Share Posted April 16, 2014 If it's that expensive timer relay that people have used for their defender heated screens (can't recall the part number at the minute) then it's quite feasible it could randomly turn on and off if it has got damp inside. CwazyWabbit Posted April 16, 2014 Share Posted April 16, 2014 If the problem is from damp you may be able to pop it open and give it a good clean with some isopropyl alcohol and an old tooth brush. CwazyWabbit Posted April 17, 2014 Share Posted April 17, 2014 The grey tall relay, it isn't actually a relay and contains no moving parts, it's all electronics. So it won't click but it is most likely driving the relays that are making the clicking noise. A stray earth caused by damp in the grey relay could cause the random switching you describe.
