Soren Frimodt
Basically there is only one drawback to using a thick walled tube, and that is weight. In all other aspects its much nicer to work with as its easier to get good bends, easier to weld gaps in your notching and generally easier to weld without blowing through. Also it doesn't dent nearly as easy, meaning you can have roll and still be able to use it. Provided the construction is strong enough of course
landroversforever
Your best bet is to download the roll cage specs from the MSA website, usually refered to as the 'blue book' it contains all the regulations.
Bowie69
44mm x 2.64mm is minimum I believe. So at 2" and maybe 3.2mm you will be well over specced, and nothing wrong with that. For the protection tubes, well, depends how hard you intend on hitting things
Chicken Drumstick
+1 on the blue book. Seems silly to build a cage and be under spec, thus increasing risk and preventing you using the vehicle in competition at a later date.

Bowie69
Cage, but as above, check the books! There's a lot more to making a cage than a hoop with a crossed brace.
biasbilt
thats great thanks guys, is the 44mm tube for roll cage use or coil over frame work? 44mm tubing is not MSA approved for cross country events. You do not need to use CDS for cross country events as pipe to EN10255 ('blue band') is allowed. The key advantage of going to CDS is the increased material strength allows a thinner wall thickness to achieve equivalent strength with a the consequent weight reduction. Unless you are going for speed events, this probably not a key consideration. The pipe allowed has the following dimensions for mandatory members: 42.3x3.2mm for vehicles below 1000kg and 48.3x3.2 for vehicles above 1000kg. The cage needs to be made to an approved design (as per the blue book) and optional members can be of 30x3.2mm pipe. Hope this helps and you haven't already started. As said previously, the cage needs to be done properly if it is to perform as designed in the event of a roll. Cheers, Toby
