Borrego Yellow Freelanders, how many?

Hi Folks, newbie to forum and first time Land Rover owner here.

This week I bought a 2003 Freelander Kalihari 1.8 decked out in Borrego Yellow (paint code 757 shown on vin plate). To say the least it does stand out especally as it doesn't have either 'AA' or 'BAA Gatwick' plastered all over its sides!

This appears to have always been in private ownership so someone ordered it like this.

My question is how many where made for private use in Borrego Yellow and how rare is it now?

Welcome to the forum! For the 2003 Freelander Land Rover introduced the Kalihari available in two additional colours, Borrego Yellow and Tangiers Orange! Both of these colours are very loud! I remember seeing these both at my local dealership! Even today I see two Borrego Yellows in my neck of the woods! One has privacy glass all round very nice! The black and yellow contrast is nice and the tints tone the yellow down! The other has no privacy glass and hasnt aged well tbh. It was only made for one year as the facelift model (4A chassis) was made in 2004! However these were registered in 2003 on a 53 plate!!!(september 2003-March 2004) so really the Borrengo Yellow was only made for 6months! However you may see a late registered 2004 model......BUT i very much doubt that as it was a special order colour only Land Rover would not make place an order for that bright a paint work if a deposit hadnt been placed by a customer! I have only ever seen one later registered Freelander same lights as yours on a 2004 plate and that was in a white! Also very rare.....But not as rare as yours!

hope this helps.....tints would finish the hippo tho.... ;)

Thanks for that information, always good to learn more about the vehicle. I gave it a good drive out tonight to collect a soft-top for it. Drove very well, very pleased!

I must admit the colour has turned some heads whilst I've been driving about. The car is in very good cosmetic condition. Inside looks like new, just a few very minor knocks on the inside ridge of the back door. The paintwork may not be all original, possibly resprayed at sometime. The paintwork looks in showroom condtion and if I wasn't doing a vehicle restoration course I may not have spotted some very small tale-tale signs but having said that I'd be very happy if I had managed such a finish.

Hadn't thought of tinting the windows, the yellow and black go so well with each other. Food for thought.

I wonder if there was ever a record of the numbers privately sold in Borrego Yellow?

Guards do look good on it! Yes the front ones require holes to be drilled. Atleast the wings are plastic! Use a good sharp point wood drill and you will be fine! However for your one you can get front lamp guards that require no drilling! They are not genuine Land Rover ones but I cant really tell the differance tbh!

Ive attached a link for you!

Thanks for all your help and the link. I guess it's always nerve racking drilling into a shiney bit of paintwork. When I added the towbar to my old X-Trail the first cut into the bumber was a giant leap of faith!

Any additional black trim would go well with the yellow so I might go ahead with it later, when I'm feeling brave....

I was thinking about getting clear headlight covers and adding beam deflectors on them for travel in Europe. I had a set for the X-Trail and was a great bonus, quick and easy to change whilst waiting at the port.

I would still be interested to hear from anyone else who may own or see a Borrego Yellow Freelander. I'm beginning to wonder how rare the combo is.

Welcome to the forum, if a little belated.

Just for the info,I saw a Borrego Yellow on an 03 plate yesterday in Cheltenham. Until I saw your post I thought it was a little unusual and possibly a custom colour. Now I know better. I seem to remember seeing it before, so it may well be local.

I have to say that having owned a Freelander for around 6 months now (Silver 3 door 06 plate Adventura) I am really pleased with mine and cannot understand the detractors (and bad language) on another popular forum I joined earlier. All vehicles have their good and bad points, but at first I was worried that I was buying trouble. Time, distance and the knowledge found here have put my mind at rest. All praise to the moderators on this forum.

Cheers Jonners

Thanks Jonners, that's 2 on a list (or half as rare as I thought...) ^_^

I agree that every car has its good and bad points and I only heard about the K series head being an issue after I bought Bumble. Lucky for me it was done last November so here's looking at some stress free motoring. :i-m_so_happy:

This is the only LR forum I have joined. I'm very active on the Morris Minor Owners forum which is a good mix of down to earth folk who love Moggys in any condition. Where as an 'official' club forum is soooo up its self that members have hissy fits if you use the wrong washer, let alone a K series or Zetec engine...

If the head has been done, that's a real plus. It's the main problem with the K series engine.

I have had a couple of MGF's (K series engine) and the thinking was that once the head was done using the newer steel dowel kits instead of the plastic ones used by MG, it probably would not be a problem again. It was all to do with the coolant flow and the sudden transfer of hot coolant nto the head once the thermostat opened.

Many MG users would drill a 1/8th dia hole in the flange of the thermostat allowing water to leak past the thermostat from the get go. Therefore the transition from cold to hot water into the head was more even. But, they took longer to warm up, particularly in winter.

That's enough science - Have a good one - Jonners

I know this is an old thread, but, just in case anyone is interested, here's what I believe to be the Boreggo yellow story for Freelanders.

The LR marketing boys decided to produce a limited run of Kalahari G4 Editions - 200 of each in Borrego Yellow and Tangiers Orange.  The first to fill the order books would be the colour used in the forthcoming G4 Challenge.  Understandably, Tangiers Orange won the day, as it is synonomous with the event.  Anyway.  my brother had 2 03 plate F1s in Borrego and both have been certified by the G4 Owners club.  There is also, I believe one kicking about in Girvan. He sold one and passed the other to me.  This means that 3 of the remaining 7 (Borregos) that are believed to still be on the road are up in Scotland.

Attached are some pics of mine with the G4 Edition livery.  Be warned - the lacquer seems to peel off of this colour for fun!

Hi all I now own a yellow freelander ! Just bought it from a girl in oswestry but it is in poor condition !!!!!! So the 1.8 k series is coming out and a td4 installed. I am going to respray her as the lacquer is peeling off all over (still same colour) and then every option available added too. She is a basic Kalahari model so loads to do .... the journey has just started lol

I have one of these vehicles, in yellow! It was great fun when in use it has been parked up for many years I have just put it on ebay because I notice there is another one up there in better condition. Mine is definitely project material for someone I don't have time!
