Anderzander
Can anyone recommend a decent (but affordable) brand for vise grips and pliers please ? I've got some half decent tools but my grips and pliers are all rather cheap and nasty - and its time I got something better ... Any help appreciated
muddy
If you Cant stretch to Irwin then I have some Franklin vice grips that are very good, I also have some knipex and bacho pliers and side cutters all seem pretty good. Screwfix often have offers on sets I believe. Will.
Paul Woodward
I've always found Knipex pliers and Irwin vise grips to be good. If you're using the grips for welding then the cheapest are fine as they get ruined quite quickly.
Tanuki
For vise-grips/locking-clamps I generally use whatever ToolSatan or ScrewFox have on special-offer. For small/medium-sized pliers/side-cutters it has to be "Box-joint" - Bahco for price/value but no professional electrician will accept anything less than Lindström - http://www.lindstromtools.com/ for delicate stuff. Scotts90
Another vote for knipex pliers, use these everyday. Have a set of proper irwin vise grips and these are the only ones I haven't broken and they've had some mighty abuse.
robertspark
+1 for the above recommendations. Vice grips tend to be like adjustable grips.... Whatever works and fits (and locks) they are all a bit rough and ready

Once you have used Lindström everything else feels like you got it from the pound shop.
Anderzander
Thanks all - a great help. Irwin vice grips and Knipex pliers don't seem as expensive as I'd expected - I'll work out what size and pick some up. Thank you !
