2007 Freelander 2 rear dif. sound Haldex unit? help please

Hi there. I'm the owner of 2007 Freelander 2.

I had opened one topic few months ago about 4WD.

This time I have real problem.

I heard some weird sound on the back side of the car, like some ting latching while I going slowly and the noise is getting louder when I speed up. I went to my mechanic ( not LR because we don't have official mechanic store over here ) and when we spin the back wheel we hear that sound. It's coming from rear differential.

Any suggest? Is still safe to drive it or I should try to find a good mechanic or drive it abroad to official LR?

Maybe it's a Haldex unit? I had try to Google it but now I'm just even more confused.

Is necessary to make a service of Haldex?

I hope that someone will find enough time to help me.

They normally suffer from the front pinion bearing getting very noisy due to being over tightened during manufacture.(LR went halfway on repair for a customer of mine whose car was out of warranty but only 24,000m.) Usually shows up as a groaning noise, not a ticking. Not heard of any ticking noises from them, but you can never say never...

Not seen any rear driveshaft problems either.

Where are you located ?

I think you need to have it fixed - the problem is not going to go away. There is a special tool to change the front pinion bearing which I'm told makes the job of changing that, and that it would be difficult to do without it.Bearing this in mind it may be best to go abroad to the nearest LR agent. Unless you can find a garage locally who you really trust and are used to making up tools to get around problems like this.

I dont think any garage is going to order parts until they strip it to see whats wrong. I cant say its safe to drive - I'm a long way away and have never seen/heard your car. The haldex unit itself rarely gives problems, I have several customers with them whose cars are well over 80,000m, some over 100,000m with no problems at all.

The only Haldex problem I have ever been involved with was on a Skoda Octavia 4wd where a tyre service had fitted lower profile tyres on the rear of the car, the owner didnt know any different and drove it. the difference in rotational speeds of the front and rear wheels wrecked the Haldex. The tyre service and local Skoda agent were not helpful until I explained to the owner what had happened.A legal threat followed and the tyre service paid the garage bill to fix it...

In your case I think I would drive slowly the 200km to the LR garage and have them fix it. Any decent local garage should be able to indicate if its safe to drive with care even if they are not able to fix it.

  • 3 weeks later...

I went to local mechanic and he told me that sound is coming from rear diff. bearings. He could be right?

By the way,I drive a car last two weeks and it still goin. But the noise is same. I'm afraid to drive it so I'll left it on my parking.

I think there is total 4 bearings there, right?

It's a loud noise wich comes from rear differential. I need to obtain the bearings.

Can anyone tell me the exact numbers / marks of all differential bearings? I think They should start with LR... So I could order them from abroad and finally fix this issue.
