300Tdi Tapping Sound

Has anyone got a Disco 300Tdi that has a tapping sound from the engine bay ? i have set all the tappets to 0.20mm which is the correct gap but still have this annoying tapping sound that increases speed when revved so this has to be a crank problem, i have been told it could be a dodgy fuel injector but i have slackened each and every pipe off but still no difference in noise so now i am wondering if it could be a problem with the vacuum to the brakes.

Someone must have experienced the same problem, please let me know if you managed to cure it, would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Check the vacuum pump and the fuel lift pump as both are prone to tapping/clattering noises and of course both vary with revs.

Also I assume you checked the rotator caps were all still in place and intact when you did the valve clearances?

Yeah, all rotator caps all still there, will deffo have a look at the vacuum pump tomorrow, a couple of people have said it could be the problem.

Thanks for the reply

Dean,

My Discovery 300 Tdi had a metallic clapping noise, also speed related, checked tappets, all pulleys, removed the timing belt cover to check for something catching, found none, eventually the source was the steel cupped disk on the back of the serpentine belt crank shaft pulley. It was slightly out-of-round, and touched the timming belt cover lip, but only when rotating at idling speed and higher. I eventually removed the dished cap, but installed a propper dust seal in the timing belt cover, and no more tapping noises on my Tdi..... : ;)

Thanks for the comments, All done now, did turn out to be the vacuum pump, removed it from the engine and started it up, hey presto... no tapping. Went to the Landrover garage at Stocksbridge which i can highly recommend and bought a brand new one in box for £50.

Sounds fantastic now

also check the exhaust manifold gasket. that can make a tapping sound if it leaks slightly from a pinpoint failure.

also worst case scenario, head gasket failure at the very back of the head (venting to the engine bay instead of oil or coolant galleries). put your hand between the engine and bulkhead and feel for any 'chuffing' or sooty deposits around that area.
