Mutley
Ok so i am thinking of changing from alloy to steel rims, thinking this will give me more tyre choice..... Can any body tell me if the Genuine Wolf steel wheels are as good as they say or is there a good steel rim that is reccomended? If the Wolf wheels are that good does any one have a set of 5 for sale or know where i could buy them? Cheers all Mutley
landroversforever
I think the wolf wheels are great. I've not managed to bend one! However they are quite heavy! Withams usually have them for sale straight from the MOD or they can be bought new from numerous online places such as paddocks.
western
Got these on my 110, width is 6.5 inches, so you might be limited to tyre choice/sizes, quite a lot of tyres over 235mm wide require a 7 inch wide rim, my 255/ MT2's fit as BFG say 6.5 rims are the minimum width for these tyres. XD/Wolf rims are very strong & a lot heavier than your current alloys. there are or was 2 versions too, tubed ANR5593PM & tubeless ANR4583PM
Mutley
Thanks guys i would be looking for tubeless rims, i am after genuine Wolf not sure paddocks are genuine? western
as for being heavy!?! Dont really care wont be carrying them only when you get a puncture paddocks have these under 'aftermarket' http://www.paddockspares.com/anr4583pm-16x6-5-wolf-rim-tubeless-black-primer-coated.html if your on rear disc brakes you do not need longer studs. Mutley
Thanks Western, do you know if these are genuine as it states aftermarket? May call them tomorrow if i get time and ask if need be. Same with the other site Withams(?) See what they have? Thanks again, and yes have discs all round so studs on should cope, but if i have to change them so be it (Grrrr)
western
no need to swap studs, I haven't, been running wolf steels for near 18 years, never had a loose wheel nut or a broken stud. Withams would be the genuine item, don't know about paddocks aftermarket ones, IIRC mine have a Dunlop D> trade mark on them
Mutley
Ok so i will make a couple of phone calls tomorrow and check them out..... Whilest on the subject , can you tell me the tyre make and pattern that most farmers use think it's the MOD type too not sure? Thanks again ps will know the pattern type when i see it (not overly aggresive but enough for road and off)
landroversforever
Round these parts, most of the farmers are running the bog standard 205 or 235 Grabber TR.
western
military use Michelin XZL https://c7743.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com/Images/large/MICHXZL.jpg IIRC these Goodyear G90 http://www.tyre-pictures.com/Goodyear/G90.jpg were a alternative & used during the original pre service trials, not very good one wet roads. they are ok on road but there are better tyres for every day use, most farmers would stay with whatever the factory fitted when new. Mutley
Thats good to know. Fed up with the noise from big chunky tyres so just wanted a good all rounder with out causing a major debate on who thought which tyre was best, plus hoping an all round tyre will be a fraction better on fuel consumption!?! western
my KM2 MT's aren't overly noisy on tarmac, no howling when driving like some older tyres. also have good manners on wet/greasy roads too.
Mutley
Was thinking an all round tyre has to be better than a square one!?! Sorry couldnt resist that, i know very sad, wont happen again well not for a while at least.
Orgasmic Farmer
Have a read of this thread for an extended discussion of Wolf Wheels... http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic31672-90.html?sid=cddacf8d5e8253bc7674b85f616ce5ff
Boris113
We have XZLs fitted to the works 110s, they are surprisingly noisy and follow tramlines in the road quite badly. They are not great on wet tarmac either. I have tried Km2s and also Cooper STTs and they are both much better on all counts HTH
Mutley
Thanks guys, looking good for Withams wheel wise, not so sure about wife wise!?! Me thinks i will have to work on that bit???? Next question is tyre size?... at the moment i have 265/75/16's (insa Turbo special track) on now, so to keep tyre cost down was thinking maybe a tadge smaller tyre!?! but i dont want girlie thin things, but something that looks the part size wise, any thoughts/suggestions please? All the best Mutley
Happyoldgit
I've got to quite like the Conti Cross Contacts I had on both my previous and new Puma, as they are standard fitment on new Defenders you can often pick up as new take-off's. western
235/85R16 would be the smallest size that will fit & still look OK, I used to have this size on my 110 in the old BFG Tracedge pattern, when these were no longer sold, swapped to same size in BFG MT's. A good tyre on the road, and they work well in the rough stuff as well: Mine seem to be wearing reasonably quick though, they've lost about 4mm in 12,500 miles. For all I know that might actually be normal - it's the first time I've ever had a set of new tyres! And a fair amount of that mileage is on forest roads which are rather rough on tyres. Timpo
I thought about a set of Wolfies, but opted against it, 6.5J width did limit the tyre selection to 235/85. So I took the Modular route, cheap as chips, and a 7J rim, so I have a set of Toyo Open County tyres fitted to five rims here, 255/85 giving a 33.4" diameter. If I damage a where, no problem, bin it and replace with new. This will save my 265/75-16 ZU alloys/BFG AT2 for road work.
tuko
Like Ralph I to have 255/85's on my genuine tubeless Wolf's, which I'm very pleased with. I actually like the narrower rims with these tires at the tire protect the rim edges more than a wider rim. My offroading mate has 35" with 10" rims and his rim edges are totally destroyed. Myself I think staying to the narrowest rim width for the tire that you want to run is the best.
Mo Murphy
I agree with Todd, the wider tyre with the narrower wheel helps protect the rim. Mo
Green Bob
While we're talking about wolf rims, other than load capacity, thickness of steel and price, are there any other differences between the genuine rims and the 'wolf style'? Essentially, is the offset the same, as my 255/85 km2s catch the arch spats on the modulars they're on and I'm given to understand the wolfs' offset is bigger/smaller meaning the tyres wouldn't catch?
landroversforever
The wolfs offset is 20.6mm, this means the wheel mounting face is that far from the centre of the run towards the outside of the car.
Mutley
Oh pooh! Was considering going the modular way 7j's for more tyre size coice!.... Then you guys come back with this arguement for saving the rim edge with wolf wheels and larger 255/85 tyres... choices, choices.mmmmm my head hurts! Thanks lads like to hear different views, Mutley
