Lord_Unsub
Evening all, Planing on a trip to white sheet hill in Wiltshire soon. I've looked it up on the os maps (not got any fancy gps yet - strictly old school for now!) and online, and various clips on youtube - and closer to when i get chance I'll give them a ring to make sure etc... As far as i can see from the videos, it seems like a gentle easy going lane almost perfect for my first one, and gauging by the videos to be honest you could probably get your average saloon down it. Just wondering if anybody has ever done it before? Much love James
SPendrey
I drove it a couple of months ago... very straight forward. The next bit on the map to the East (Mere) is under voluntary TRO at the moment though.
SPendrey
In fact, while I'm at it, the lanes (byways & ORPAs) to the NW of White Sheet Hill were also driveable... rather overgrown though, so if your paintwork is precious I would avoid. The one north of White Sheet Hill which connects Berkeley Fm and The Elms is a byway, but if you approach from the northern end it is signed as a bridleway! Also very overgrown. You'll also note the southern end of this has two entrances/exits. The northern most of the two was blocked by the mother of all trees. Finally, there is a nice little hill climb to the north at Horningsham.
Lord_Unsub
SPendrey, Thanks for the info! As for paintwork, I'm not overly fussed but wouldn't wreck it for the sake of it either - but lane scrapes are acceptable ? I'll get back to the map then! Cheers again James
Lord_Unsub
Well.... That was an eye opener! Did all the lanes bar the voluntary one. Found the mother of all trees! Found some deep-ish tracks -well for my standard FL with normal tyres fitted! Biggest satisfaction for me was the way the car handled it. It was up to its chassis in some of the tracks, and I thought more than once that it would beach. But it didn't even drag, and the TC light only flickered briefly once which I was surprised at as the are normal road tires bias to mud/snow, But are not blocky tread. And that's it, totally hooked! SPendrey
Excellent, well done. It is an addictive activity!
FridgeFreezer
My experience with the FL is it will surprise you every time with how far it'll go. Also, wash all the moving parts afterwards: VCU bearings especially seem to suffer from mud/dirt ingress quite quickly.
Lord_Unsub
Hi guys, Thanks for the advice, I had given it a good bath, although more to see just how bad the scratch was that ran from indicator to indicator on the passenger side ??
