clutch master cylinder connection rod

Almost finished replacing my clutch master cylinder on my 2006 TD4. Last part seems simple enough but I am struggling to connect the rod to the clutch pedal. The gap between the pedal and the air duct seems too small and I dont want to force it and risk breaking the basket connector. What am I missing? Any simple solutions? I dont want to remove fascia, steering wheel etcetc....many thanks
