FridgeFreezer
Check the simple stuff - split / blocked turbo hoses, leaks, blows that sort of thing. ODB-II Fault code readers are about £5 from amazon these days, cheaper than the fuel to drive to the dealer and worth a try IMHO.
Cynic-al
Sounds like a 2001 diesel fiat I had, it would run fine until you tried to floor it to overtake something then the light would come on and you'd lose power. Brown trousers to say the least! Turn the engine off and on again and it was fine again. That turned out to be an EGR fault so it was blanked off and no problems after that. In my experience the dealers have lost touch with mechanics, they will only change a part if the computer says so but half the time it's a false reading caused by something much more fundamental. I use a local bosch approved garage who are generally very good for all my cars. Took me a long time to find a decent one though Good luck!
