defender dinky
hi, freelander td4 2001 had a grinding whining noise from front n/s wheel so I jacked it up and got movement when I hold wheel at 12oclock and 6 oclock it moves about 1mm is this wheel bearing movement can I tighten hub nut up a little more or can they be over tightened and damage the bearings dd
Boydie
Yes, that amount of movement is excessive however if you heard a grinding noise first change the bearing, it must be running dry and if so is stuffed. Rule of thumb for correct bearing tension (with the NEW bearing) tighten up the retaining nut, back it off 1/4 of a turn and lock it up. Les Henson
You have what is known as a sleeve bearing in that it's one piece and has to be pressed in usually with a hydraulic press or imaginitive use of a vice. Getting the old bearing out is again difficult as once the retaining circlip is removed, it should then be pressed out. The shape of the hub assembly sometimes makes this very difficult and usually the bearing separates with the outer sleeve left in the hub assembly, and the inner bearing track is left on the driveshaft hub. A trick for removing the outer sleeve from the hub is MIG a ring of weld around the inside and let it cool. The ring contracts a small amount and use of a hammer and chisel on the weld will eventually get it out. The bearing track is a different matter. You can't get behind it to knock it off, so cut best part of the way through with an angle grinder and then split it with a chisel. Whatever you do - don't hammer the new bearing in, it can come apart and you will have to reassemble it if you can. The sleeve is very brittle and can chip/crack quite easily. If you buy a half decent bearing, then a new nut should come with it. Tighten to 400nm (don't slacken it off - 1/4 turn is a lot less). Play and noise from a sleeved bearing means that it's badly worn, so you should replace asap. Les.
