Freelander tailgate regulator

When I bought my freelander, amoungst other things, the tail gate window didn't work. So, I thought, buy a repair kit from that well known auction site. £20 got me new cables, cable ends, glue and grease, and instructions. What a cow of a job! 5 hours it took me to get the regulator out, strip it and rebuild it using the kit..... 3 go's I had to get the cables coming out the right glands on the motor (my fault as I didnt pay enough attantion when stripping). Cutting 2 of the cables to the correct length eas easy enough as only 1 cable was broken. The broken cable took a bit of figuring out.

The result, the window now works, and drops an inch when I try to open the door..... No more forcing the window out and in the seal at the top when I open the door... :D

These are good kits, if you are fairly handy with tools, and you pay GREAT attention when taking it apart.

Another of my freelenders little problems fixed!

Now to find out why the tailgate window wiper doesn't work, nor does the heated rear screen. (having said that, they might work now that I have fixed the window regulator.... does the ECU cut power to these two things when the woindow isn't working right?)

Well, it rained a couple of nights ago and the rear screen misted up, the heated screen works, so thats all the rear door issues sorted, or is it?

Today the new cables I fitted earlier in the week let go...... not had a chance to investigate yet but either I have not 'cured' the glue on the cable ends right or I have not replicated one of the cables correctly.... either way it done work no more.

So, back onto ebay tonight and orderd yet another repair kit, this time a pre-made set of cables, comes complete with tensioners, clips and springs ets, and only £5 more than the DIY cut cables to length and glue the ends on kit I bought previously......

I am really getting to like my Freelenader but she does grate on the nerves at times..... lol

As I thought, the glue had let go on one of the cable ends, not cured properly! This kit is wholely reliant on the glue being cured properly which is a faff as you have to create a little oven with a tin can and a hair drier. The hair drier I had didn't get it hot enough so it was, I suppose, doomed to failure.

I ordered another repair kit from the bay, one of the pre-made kits so no glueing of the ends. I fitted the kit today and the window is working again.

It was a MUCH easier kit to fit than the one where you have to make up the cables yourself.... ( no swearing, no shouting and no skint knuckles, lol )

So fingers crossed thats it all sorted......

Hi,

Sorry to Hi-Jack your thread but I have a similar problem so though it would be better to add it rather than starting a new thread.

The window was working fine until recently when I found that one of the cables had snapped, I have purchased a similar kit to you, so i am not looking forward to fitting it given your problems.

I have a slightly different problem initially as due to the window failing in the closed position I do not seem to be able to remove the glass from the holder so I can remove the regulator. I can't get access to the bolts that hold it in place unless the windows in wound down (which I can't do).

Any suggestion as to how I can manually wind the window down or remove the regulator in another way.

Thanks.

Well I did cut the cables in the end and after ordering three different kits (as the first two did not fit) I have managed to reassemble the window now.

This has unfortunatly given me another unexpected problem.

When power was re-instated the window come down (with no beep) and I then used the interior button to move it to the top most position to calibrate the CCU. This all worked well and the window goes up and down on the switch with no problem.

I then tried to open the rear door and found that the glass did not move down, the door unlocked but the glass was keeping it closed. I managed to get it open by moving it down slightly by hand and then closed the door which did activate the switch and the window went back up with no problem.

I tried again and it seem that the motor activates for a second to try and lower the window, but it hardly moves. It worked perfectly before I changed the cable.

Mark.

Great stuff!

Here I buy a freelander TD4 and already having a problem with my rear window!

When I purchased the car the rear window worked fine, but recently I have to click the rear door handle twice before it moves up after having open the rear door and when I close the door the window only moves up 3mm, hardly enough to keep any rain out!

This buying of a new regulator cannot be the only solution surely, as I see a lot of other people are simply giving up on trying to fix but merely buy another kit!
