Little OT - Any electronics experts in?

I've got a router which has died. The motor doesn't even attempt to spin. I've pulled it apart and had a prod around with the multimeter, but to be honest don't really know what the readings I have mean, or what bits I should prod next.

The shaft spins freely, so that pretty much rules out any mechanical issues. Down to the electrickery.

See the picture for numbers.

1. 240v here, no surprise.

2. With the switch pressed, volts reach here.

3. This (plus one you can't see) is the terminals after the circuit board. I get about 100v here regardless of the potentiometer position.

4. There is continuity across these points.

So, what next? Does the above point to any likely suspects?

Although way off LR Topic..... here is a PDF that talks about modifying a router for cnc use.....

Basically they bin the speed controller (which is a triac [bit on the end of the aluminium heatsink])

You can ignore most of the pages (ok 99% of them...)

Basically go to PDF page 15 and on page 16 is a wiring mod to bypass the speed control...

Hence you can test if the triac is caput!

http://www.vhipe.com/product-private/SuperPID-v2_Instructions.pdf

Good luck

(err ... temporary bypass will allow you to test the rest of the router .... so as to decide if its worth looking any further)

That looks very similar to my router. It's not seen much use and been ok so far.

Anyway, back on off topic, I had a sabre saw fail on me last year. It hadn't seen much use, looked like new inside.

Some detailed examination revealed a broken wire on the winding.

Due to what I believe must have been an assembly fault, said wire had been rubbing against the inside of the stator and shorted out, once the enamel coating had worn through.

Luckily I was able to splice in a repair section, and all works well again ?

I repaired a similar erbauer one after the spindle snagged in a dust sheet and stalled the motor, which let the smoke out of the handle.

As someone says take the speed cont out of cicuit and try 230v across the motor for a second or two, you lose the speed control and soft start.

If this works my bet is the scr/triac is a gonner. See if you can get a part number of the black transistor like package (3 legs)

or post a pic/model number of router

also check you have some carbon left in your brushes, if the carbon brushes aren't touching the commutator it wont send any voltage to the motor coil. These are off the wires at point 4 which are wrapped round the coil and then into the brass coloured brush holders.

Righty then, after a busy daddy-daughter day I managed to wear her out enough to execute a swift bedtime routine and get out to the garage for further tinkering.

First thing I tried was to bypass the switch and circuit board, using the convenient chocolate blocks to run 240v straight to the motor. Nada. Not a peep.

So time for a further bit of de-assembly. After getting to and pulling the motor apart I discovered that one of the wires to connect the coil windings had snapped at the connector. Out with the Aldi special soldering iron (by god it's slow.....) and a quick blob of solder later it is now properly attached once again.

Reassemble the router enough for a quick test, and success, it lives! Put the rest of the plastic back on and we're done. Total time, about 35 mins. I call that a result. :D

Shame it's not a patch on the Makita router I've been borrowing recently. But it was only £5 from Gumtree so can't complain.
