Noise

My 02 Freelander TD4 has started making a grating/grumbling noise at low road speeds, ie less than 35mph. I thought it was the near side front wheel bearing but that seems to be ok. It's going into the garage for "investigations" on Monday, just thought I'd ask on here to see if it's a known problem. Rear shaft bearings have been done in the past and this does seem to be near side front. The noise is related to road speed not engine/gearbox speed.

Btw, applying the brakes makes no difference to the noise so unlikely to be a brake problem.

Depends how freelander-savvy the garage are, if they're not clued up they might clutch at straws and decide it's the IRD or something else expensive.

If in doubt, remove the propshaft and drive it round in front-wheel-drive, see if the noise goes.

The garage are pretty good, 4x4 specialists but they were talking about pulling the front half shafts so I'll have a word when I take it in.

I know and they know that the VCU is ok so fingers crossed!

I'm not 100% sure but I reckon pulling the front driveshafts out would result in an undrivable vehicle and possibly damage to the gearbox/IRD if you tried. The rear prop just unbolts quite easily.

This is just to check the condition, not to drive the vehicle.
