reb78
My front brakes squeak as I drive along at slow speeds. Pretty sure it's the brakes as a light foot on the pedal makes the noise stop. The pads aren't to the point of changing and it's done this on two sets of pads now. Normally a light smear of copperslip on the back of the pad cures it, but it hasn't worked this time. Has anyone got a part number or link to a set of anti squeal shims? It's a 1989 110 as in my sig. The 'springs' on the pins that the pads slide on are there wire ones that sit on each side, not the springs I have seen that the pin runs through if that makes any difference. western
These SFP000260 --http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/101611/0/brake_pad_set_front_defender are my current & new [waiting to be fitted] front pads for my 1989 110CSW, the new set have the pins & long coil spring type anti rattle set up, but NO anti squeal shims, I'm not sure if the existing pads have shims fitted. no anti squeal shims shown or listed in http://lrcat.com/#31/4/52911
reb78
I couldn't find any in lrcat either. So I could get a set of these? http://www.shop4autoparts.net/Defender/Brakes/Discs,Calipers-&-Drums/rtc5001s-brake-pin-&-spring-kit-85mm.html Are those springs specifically meant to stop the squeal/squeak? What's the difference compared to these? http://www.lrdirect.com/606688-Spring-Clip-Front-Pads-Rrds90-Ear?gclid=CO64nIuxhcUCFWrkwgodxFAA9g Finally, I can't find the 'springs' I have got fitted listed in the parts books. They fit on each side under the top and bottom pin and wrap around the centre of the pad - Like these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVER-DEFENDER-DISCOVERY-90-110-BRAKE-PAD-RETAINING-KIT-PFK346-LX0165-/400489078394 Which is best to fit and stop the squeak? western
I've always had the first of your links pins & coil springs, don't recall any front brake squealing problems. the are meant to stop the pads rattling when brakes are off, but won't stop any pad squeal when brakes are in use. reb78
Thanks Ralph. Mine squeak when moving slowly, stop when brakes are applied or moving quickly so maybe the springs are worth a try. I presume you don't have the things in the ebay link fitted at all?
western
nope, mine are same as your first link http://www.shop4autoparts.net/Defender/Brakes/Discs,Calipers-&-Drums/rtc5001s-brake-pin-&-spring-kit-85mm.html but for vented calipers cos the pins are longer to account for the wider caliper. reb78
Well, I went from this setup To this tonight Can someone confirm that this is all correct and these two setups are interchangeable? The springs seemed to want to wedge themselves into the slots in the brake pad backing, should I put a washer on there to stop this?
V8 Freak
Look about normal Rich... The springs do try to escape but generally only one edge, and tend to stay in place ok. Neil
western
Looks good to me Rich, looks the same as my fitted pads/pins

Boydie
Brake squeal is caused by the brake pad material, and cannot be totally negated by the brake retaining clips. In days of yore when they were fabricated from that horrible material asbestos brake squeal was almost unknown, and in most cases was an indication that your pads had worn down to bare metal. These days with metallic composite materials the greater the % of metal in the pads, the more possibility that the pads will squeal. Oddly enough it is possible to have two identical cars and one will squeal, the other wont
reb78
I thought there was an element of the vibration between the back of the pad and the piston that also contributed to the noise and the anti squeal shims were part of the solution to this. Obviously the material will also do it, but if they are not free to move on the pins or held in the correct place when not applied then you could also get squeal, hence the trial of the alternative springs.
