Hi I'm new to land rovers but me and the misses are expecting our second child and need a second car - really like freelanders but with a budget of £2k I feel very limited - I have seen a 2005 54 plate 1.8 XEi Special Edition 5dr (petrol) on 66k miles or a 55 plate 1.8 e on 110k miles I'm wanting to know if petrol is the wrong choice as it might be a choice between Land Rover and non Land Rover any help would be greatly appreciated

The petrols have a terrible reputation due to people not fixing a couple of simple things. If you budget for a new cylinder head & the upgraded head gasket & dowels they are cracking motors and a real bargain. I put 70k on one I got given as scrap ^_^

The TD4 are pretty bulletproof, the older L-series diesel is less exciting but very strong. If you buy a TD4 get the PCV filter changed IMMEDIATELY - it's dirt cheap but if not done (and it's often ignored) it will lunch the turbo, costing ££££.

Other than that, have a search back through this part of the forum, buying advice has been covered a hundred times over. Should be OK to find something under £2k, you're probably better off paying £1500 for something and keeping £500 back to sort out problems like VCU or IRD etc. as there are so many neglected ones.
