clutch working in reverse

hi i have a 2003 1.8 freelander i went to drive it yesterday and could not get it to go into gear when pressing clutch

but it will go into gear when not pressing clutch and start to move off when you press clutch pedal down ???

has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it

The only way I can see this happening is if the clutch pressure plate has broken internally. Normally it uses a bit which works like a see-saw so when you press the pedal, the pressure plate is lifted away from the friction plate against a spring.

If the fulcrum / spring were broken, both sides of the see-saw would move in & out together rather than in opposite directions - giving the symptoms you have.

Sadly, the only option is to change the clutch!

Your clutch fork pivot shaft has siezed , the clutch is over engaging

The reverse operation you are experiencing is due the clutch fingers inverting and locking into the driven plate.

It is a very common fault on the type of box used in behind the 1.8.
