Td5 Brake issue

Done a lot of research on this forum, but no luck so far.

On my 2001 Td5 Defender I've changed discs, calipers, pads and brakelines (flexible steel ones) all around.

been bleeding the brakes for at least 10 times (both manual and with a pressure self bleed system) with no air coming out of any the calipers

when driving I have brakes, but still feels like a sponge...

when you push hard on the pedal (engine running) you can feel that it is going down very slow.

any tips/recommendations or anything I overlooked (only option I can think of is the mastercilinder... )

If the pedal is creeping to the floor with a steady pressure applied it could be a bad master cylinder?

Have you got the calipers on the correct sides with the bleed nipples at the top? Impossible to bleed them if they're upside down!

In my experience a pedal that slowly goes in under pressure is a seized piston/caliper. Had that symptom/solution on a Mini once. Have the calipers all been changed for new?

[from a quick search the D2 and Mini seem to both have a diagonally split system, so could be the same thing]

+1 on everything Aragorn said.

I've made the silly mistake some years ago of fitting the brake calipers on the wrong sides. And couldn't get them to bleed! Nightmare of a time, but I'll never make the same mistake again. So make sure bleed nipples are at the top.

How does the pedal feel when the engine off and the vacuum pressure extinguished. Any creep? Don't forget the pedal will be softer when the engine is running.

Have you checked your wheel bearings too?

Funny this, as I've got exactly the same issue, 2002 Td5 Defender 90 non ABS, all new genuine callipers/discs/hoses/pads and Master cylinder, but getting the exact symptoms as you, which were the exact symptoms before I changed the master cylinder too, so it could be a new duff TRW master cylinder, but not convinced.

I've not picked that project up for a while as been busy doing other things, but my next thoughts where to clean/replace the bias valve, having a thought that air could have got trapped in there somewhere.

The symptoms from my experience are that of a bi-passing master cylinder - but something's just not adding up, and not got the cash right now to try replacing the master again.

it's a strange world...

after bleeding the brakes god knows how many times yesterday and the spongy brake, I left the car for the night.

drove it today for about 10 miles to MOT to have it checked and the brakes worked all great. even had a comment from the guy to say the brakes worked extremely well...

All this without touching the brakes after last night...

weird!
