discomikey
Hi all, almost completed my on the side engine replacement job everything connected up and sorted, im having funny starter motor symptoms, sometimes the engine will crank for 1-2 seconds then stop, and you have to turn the key back and to crank again, it will do the same over and over, sometimes it will crank for a little longer, once or twice it cranked for maybe 20 seconds, the starter sounds strong and not slow as if the battery is flat or theres a bad earth, the battery was knackered maybe beyond repair, but i found a decent one (albeit that doesent fit) and was using that in conjunction with a proper (HGV spec) starter box, so i dont think power is the issue. i have attached a video for help. also what is the fuel pump priming procedure, i just assumed it would be turn the key on, let the pump run for a bit, turn it off and repeat 5-10 times, this usually does the trick, is there a special procedure for the TD4 engine, bearing in mind the fuel lines would have probably been empty up to the HP pump. finally, there is a sensor, which i believe to be a hotwire sensor on the boost pipe, just where it comes from the cold side of the intercooler into that plastic boost pipe. on the old (05) harness, there is a plug for this, which comes off the same branch of harness as the MAP?? sensor on the inlet manifold. on the new (04) engine, there is no plug for this, only the MAP?? sensor and no extra plug. will this be matched to the newer ECU and therefore throw a code up as its missing an input, or will it be fine, i wouldnt mind changing the engine harness but it is a ballache to do and im so close to finishing now, obvoiusly i will if i have to. please find pictures of the old vs new harness. also worth noting another 04 plate TD4 i looked at had the sensor and wire. multiplug for removed engine with y piece for mystery sensor... same multiplug for manifold on installed engine, no y piece and extra plug...????? discomikey
looking back over the video it could possibly be a bad connection somewhere but i did the old clean jump lead earth bypass trick which normally solves that trick and the old engine turned over fine with the same starter before it went bang. the dash lights flash on and off as it draws current i dont know if thats normal for a FL but i wouldnt think so.
