Alarm key-fob programming - for free!

Last week I lost my Electric Freelander 1 keys! I'm sure they will turn up somewhere but have not yet. I used the key code to order new keys from a main dealer - which was about £40 so not too spiteful. The trouble was the car needed to be programmed to accept the new alarm key fob.

I had called a mobile doer of such things but they could not visit for a week and it was not mobile so I couldn't take it to a dealer.

I already had a Rovacom FaultMate diagnostic thingy with the licence for Td5 Defender re-mapping - so yesterday I bought the Freelander 1 Body ECU licence and re-programmed it myself.

I just thought I would offer the service if any of you need similar. I don't want anything in return - but it would make me feel the licence was worthwhile if it gets used more than once! As it turned out, the licence cost the same as getting someone out to do it - so really, it owes me nothing.

You can program 4 different fobs to a Freelander 1 - so I added a couple of old ones I had lying around from other vehicles, just in case!

I've only got a single key and fob for my wife's Freelander 1, but I've got a spare FOB. I live in Cranleigh, so any chance I could swing by at some point?

So it a case of just buying any old freelander remote bipper and then you recoding it? I could do with a couple as my FL1 came with one key and no remote. I'd be happy to cover postage + beer / biscuit funds. What data do you need for the programming?

I think it's the ECU that gets programmed with the code of the fob. So you'll be wanting a big jiffy bag......

I could of course be wrong but that is how it reads to me.

I read it that any fob can be programmed to the car from this:

I assumed it was the car/ecu from .....

Also diagnostic tools like Rovacom tend to connect to the car, the limitaion of four fobs could only be enforced by the ecu as a fob wouldn't know if any other fobs were programmed and it seems to be more secure programming the ECU to accept a fob rather trhan just programming up any fob to open any car...... I'm sure Si will clarify which way it is done when he gets a mo.....

The fobs have a fixed code. You go in to the settings in the ECU (so you need the computer plugged into the Freelander) then tell it to listen for fob transmissions. You press one of the buttons on the fob, it makes a bleep to confirm it's got it then either terminate the learn cycle or move to the next fob. The ECU will store the codes for 4 different fobs.

It seemed to accept a defender fob.

I believe the fobs built in to a key work the same.

I think you can buy a fob from land rover which is pre programmed to your vehicle. I'm not sure how that works though.

Any of you want a go - pm or phone at work to arrange a time!

Ironically, I just found my keys! There is a USB memory stick on the key ring - and I found it (with keys) plugged into my mill! At least I have a spare now!

For that to work either they would either have to have a record of what fobs were already programmed into all ECU's and create a cloned fob, or there is some magic learning mode of the ECU ....

Both scenarios are quite interesting ......

Hi my Freelander1 2006 would not start and the battery went dead as it had been sitting for a while so I fully charged the  battery and tried to start it but it would not start ? I called AA and they said I needed a new transponder ring  "after using his eobd obd gadget"   which said immobilizer error? so I got a new one and the car still did not start . Is this a programing issue ? and how can I reprogram the key fob to my car ?

Thanks anyone?
