Steve200TDi's New Racer!!

I've always fancied having a go at Comp Safari racing, but didn't want to spend the big bucks on a Bowler wildcat or Simmbugghini, just in case i didn't like it!

About two months ago I found something I liked, went to have a look at it and bought it!

Nice small tyres for racing!

So with the help of Chris (GBMUD) for towing and work for their loan of a very nice triple axle tiltbed trailer we went and picked it up!

As it was the owners last land rover based vehicle it came with spares for everything! Gearbox, propshafts, diffs, halfshafts etc etc and a spare set of wheels and tyres, oh and a couples of axle casings!

As it is so short it fitted in the garage nicely along with all the spares!!

If you're wondering, it's and Allard Racer. Apparently chassis number one or the first to have ali body panels. It's based on a 100inch range rover classic chassis with a 4.2V8 auto set back with radiator and fuel tank in the back.

Yep, nice cheap racing and hopefully lots of fun!

People may know it as Purple Pig 3!

It wont be staying purple though!

So after unloading it and everything else I know that I wasn't going racing straight away as I would need to get helmet, membership etc and also to sort the racer out.

But I want to use not necessarily in the racing sense to see if there are any problems or issues to sort out.

So I sorted it out and put some knobblies on and went to Slindon!

It rained all day, but glad I was prepared with waterproofs from head to tow beings it has no doors!

We had a bit of fun!

And it highlighted a few issues, the distributor came loose and the engine cut out, but I think this was done to a fuel issue mentioned by the previous owner as it is running cheapo fuel pumps. I'll be getting some replacement Bosch ones I think!

As you may have guessed I haven't got a trailer let alone a trailer licence!

I'll be sorting the licence out once I've done some research!

i was browsing ebay for trailers and quite liked the Brian James tiltbed, but they're quite spendy and also the Ifor Williams with the wheel underneath.

I triple axle tiltbed popped up 6 miles from home that fitted the bill. I knew I needed a trailer, but not quite yet. As it was quite near put a bid on thinking it would go for more..........

Oh! I've won a trailer :blink::blink: Cool! :)

Well Dave, I'm hoping to go racing with SCOR 4x4, I've already joined their club, but it maybe next year now. I may go and spectate at there last two events up at Bordon.

I also want to go racing at Seven Sisters/Walters Arena too!

Kevin has sold up and bought a Ford Model A hot rod! It's rather nice!

So after a wash off, I set too and sort out the issues and do a general check of it all.

The front clam shell was looking a bit sorry for itself, I wanted to make a complete new one, but half of it was still ok, so I compromised and redid the front half!

That's as far as I've got with that, as I've moved onto other stuff!

miketomcat popped round after one of his parts collecting mystery tours for a cuppa and a looksee!

'Steve, have you seen this crack in the chassis' 'No, Mike!' I said.

Oh dear, so the next day I removed all the ali skid plates from underneath to check the whole chassis as it is quite old, at least 25 years at a guess!

The crack went up and over the chassis rail in front of the drivers footwell.

So I made some patches to plate it all in.

There was a little bit of rust underneather the chassis from the trailing arms rearwards, looks like it may have rusted from the inside out.

With the chassis all plated up and painted I could move on to other things.

The axles still had lockers and hardened shafts in. I was still unsure of whether to buy them or not. I decided to remove them and start with standard stuff and maybe upgrade to a locker of 4 pin diff at a later stage.

So out with all the lockers and shafts.

Dropped them off on the way to Silverstone for the MotoGP!

And collected some stable matting, an ECU and some steering boxes!

Ordered a few things, a couple of wheel bearings, new front disks and some new swivel seals.

Fitted two standard 2 pin diffs, some one piece shafts for the rear and some shiny CV's for the front which I had in the parts warehouse!

One of the treesliders had a small impact so I chopped out the bad bit and spliced in a new bit, very pleased with it!

Looking smart!

A good check over and preventative maintenance vs just dragging it out of the hedge seems to make the world of difference for actually finishing an event. Seen it soooo many times when an unloved car expires on lap 2.

So I may well be dragging you out of the shrubbery at some point then. Bordon events would be a good first outing for you to come and have a go - the soft sand can be fairly forgiving, just watch out for the trees.

If you are running 2 pin diffs, be sure to take your foot off the throttle the second you get the smallest amount of air, and bring a spare one or two.

Wow smart looking racer Steve, you have no idea how many times I've sat drooling on ebay.uk dreaming of going over there and picking up an ex-comp racer with a lovely V8. would be a great starting point for a racer for the kind of terrain I like :) I might just do it one day, the dream isn't gone yet, especially not after seeing this beauty :)

The steering was a little notchy on the first outing and so I thought I'd better have a look and investigate the cause.

I took the 4 bolts of the top and looked inside. I had two boxes that I checked and both had obviously had a harsh wake on the steering system as the input worm/screw thread had a 'dent' in it causing a tight spot. The output shaft was fine and not badly scored around the output seal.

So, I thought with that output shaft I could replace the output shaft in my old steering box from 'The Blue one' which I still had in a box. I knew that was a good box, but it leaked from the output shaft.

With the new output shaft fitted and all adjusted I fitted it too the vehicle and added some new PAS fluid. Started the engine to bleed the system. It hasn't leaked so far and its been sitting in the garage for a week or so, but the true test will come when I use it off road!

Rear axle all done.

Front axle has new swivel seals and retainers along with new discs too.

Also renew a rear propshaft UJ and refitted both propshafts.

Once that was done I could start to refit all the underbody skid plates. For now I've fitted the central plate as I will need to make up some new captive nuts for the outers.

With the bonnet coming on nicely, still needing some ali panel work I started on the new wheel arches using some stable matting as before.

I've also re attached all the underbody skid plates, sourced some replacement radius arms and a Bosch fuel pump.

Oh and we now have a racing deadline of November for the SCOR Comp Safari at Slab Common and Driven to the Edge at Seven Sisters.

As you've probably seen I've repainted the racer in red and I fancied some stripes, so two black stripes down the middle.

So the Shakedown was to test pretty much everything!

I had fitted a tow bar to the red one. So had to test that out using the new trailer!

We noticed that one of the trailer brakes was sticking and I think its the bowden cable, so have ordered a new set of cables as most of the others aren't in great condition.

All the lights work, but have future intentions to upgrade to LED rear lights.

The 200Litre blue plastic barrel fits in the back of the 90 laying down, so we filled that up half full to see how long that lasted when we came to wash the racer.

The racer performed well with no problems, a few small adjustment needed. The steering drop arm I think needs rotating round one notch to even up the steering left to right. I was pleased that the steering box isn't leaking at all!!

The wipers will need upgrading later, I want to move away from the defender set up and use a more conventional system.

There wasn't any major rubbing to speak of and I could really test it at speed due to the speed limit :ph34r:

Next jobs are to add the MSA race numbers and service the trailer.

...ehem... you had a LH brake light out in the video...

Otherwise looking cracking! :) I noticed the wipers from the video, looked pretty lethargic, can see why you want to upgrade! :)

Well spotted, I think there maybe a bit of dodgy wiring, so I'll add that to the list!

As far as I know drop arms only fit in one position on the splines, so you'll have to do the adjustment on the track rod

Car looks good :)

You could be right there, will have a look tomorrow.

Good wipers are key! As are washers that could drown an elephant.

I have a hunch that you like Red.... :unsure:
