rrr47
I'm looking to change the oil on my 3.9, have members got any ideas on the best/cheapest to choose from? It's done about 250,000 miles. I was hoping oil would of dropped in price the same as petrol by now.
stuck
250, 000 miles without a rebuild? Valvoline VR1 20W50 in my 4.
rrr47
She's been running on lpg most of her life. Is Valvoline expensive?
stuck
I paid £26.34 for 5 Ltrs which I don't think is expensive for "Race Quality" oil
rrr47
Sounds a good price, from a motorfactors? Wilkisons or Wilko, have Castrol GTX £3.75 for 1 litre, half price, if they have it in stock. 4 litres is £20.
stuck
Eurocarparts on Fleabay. Hydraulic lifters seem quieter on the Valvoline than they did on Castrol. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330939454772?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
iomlt
VR1 no better oil for the old V8..
elbekko
That sounds really expensive for oil. Any 10W40 or 20W50 that meets the standards will do just fine. Just remember to change it often.
Bowie69
It is very good, and doesn't thin down like cheaper variants at higher temperature, worth the tenner or so over another cheaper brand.
FridgeFreezer
Smith & Allen, especially if you buy a 20L drum at a time. If you get on their facebook page there's a discount code every month.
rrr47
I went to Wilkinsons today and bought all their Castrol GTX 1 litre bottles, 7 in total for £26.25. Then went to Morrisons and they have Carlube on offer for £14.00 for 5 litres.
g&t
A good quality 20w50 mineral oil & change it (& the filter) every 3000m. My 3.5 gets done every year, despite only covering around 1500m. I wouldn't bother with expensive synthetics as the old RV8 oil pump needs something to get it's teeth into.
Bowie69
VR1 is mineral oil.
g&t
Pardon my ignorance! I once spent so long studying oil specs. that my brain hurt. By the time I sussed product (local) availability, carriage in some cases & prices I've settled on Comma Classic 20w50 (which is, I believe, the same as Halfrauds) & change it every year, usually at less than 2000m. Alsace_rangie
Mineral oils will deteriorate faster than synthetics, especially in older engines where the bores are more worn and combustion products get in the crankcase. At the change intervals mentioned above, probably not an issue. I have always used a moderate quality 100% synthetic BUT changed at mineral intervals (10000 KM). Got my old 3.5 V8 to nearly 400K KM (it was the bodywork that led me to sell it, engine was fine) and is also good for nearly 300K KM on my 200Tdi. I use a 5W40, means that the oil gets round faster when cold and doesn't load the oil pump so much, but has the required viscosity at running temperature. I buy it at the local hypermarket at less than half the price of the "brand" synthetics.
