Damn and Blast the Thing!

Firstly let me say that the central locking has given up a long time ago and only the driver door unlocks with the key.

Needed to swap cars around the parking area tonight and after having treated it to brand new upper an lower ball joints, I was going to take the pups (12 week old Clumber Spaniels) to Chippenham Ringcraft for some socialisation.

It was a dark, wet and windy night!

So I unlocked and opened the drivers door, key in the ignition and started the engine (battery can go flat from time to time) wonderful. Closed the door and moved my daughters car out of the way so I could get the Range Rover out. Come back to the Range Rover and it's ticking over nicely but locked me out solid. I can't open the drivers door, the rear tailgate button doesn't respond and the engine is running. Somehow, it has activated the locking with the keys inside (and I don't have a spare key - that's on the list to get sorted now!)

What to do, all other doors are firmly locked, screwdriver in the keyhole has no effect, all windows are up. I manage to get a flat blade in the jamb of the drivers window and lower it slightly. Is that enough to get something in to either reach the unlock button or prod the window rocker switch. Maybe, just a little more - CRACK - window gone! Bugger rsoles.....

At least I can reach in for the keys now!

New glass on order!

Anybody else had this problem, would they have tackled in differently?

Why does it always do these things when it is wet and windy! Ever tried sticking a dustbin liner over a window hole with gaffer tape when it's dark, wet and windy?

How do you get gaffer adhesive off car paint?

Cheers

Peter

if you need a spare key, they are a bgger to get hold of and get cut. Just don't go to land rover £165 for an additional key from vin and it might not work.

alarmremotes.co.uk are the only people we could find who will make you a P38 radio fob key 1,2,3 or 4 and send you a blank key for around £90, without you having to send your only good key in the post. Highly recommended.

Getting a locksmith to cut the blank will cost another £10-20.

The alternative if you lose the only key is £1000 from Landrover, for this you get a BECM, rf receiver, door lock, glovebox lock, and 2 keys.

You can also just get a key blade without the radio remote, and have the immobiliser disabled. Perfect as a spare, and even with the immobiliser enabled would be enough to open the door.

As for breaking into a P38... pretty much the only option is to saw through the latch on the B pillar, and it takes a long while.

Get a spare key. Immediately, if not sooner. They are well known for locking you out at the worst possible moment. If I ever leave mine with the key in and me out, I always open a window first (and I have 2 spare keys!). A blade-only key is fine for unlocking the door to get you in and retrieve the fob key.

You can also break in by levering the top of the door out (B pillar corner) with a pry bar just enough to get a slim bar with a hooked end in to pop the door catch up on the inside. Just don't expect the door to be perfectly straight afterwards.

One of my Range Rovers locked me out a couple of weeks ago with a flat battery. Called the AA and they were in the car in seconds. Took the guy longer to get his kit out (of the van for those with a dirty mind) than it did to break in.
