IPads, car mounts and vibrations

I'm just building a mount for the ipad in the 110. It's just struck me that it might vibrate a fair bit. Is this likely to damage the ipad?

I've adapted one of those mounts with the bendy shaft.

It's attached to the centre console but given the length of the shaft, do you think this might make the vibrations worse - should I look at another sort of mount? It was looking at the gearstick vibrating as I idled the other day that made me think of this. I haven't tried it yet as I have an otterbox case on the ipad and I need to adapt the mount itself as the iPads too deep for the current arms with its case fitted.

They're all solid state so no real fear of data loss. Vibration isn't good for joints etc but I wouldn't have thought it would be bad enough in a car? Radios and sat navs etc generally don't fall apart. I wouldve thought a long arm would be springy and give long slow oscillations?

Look up ram mounts I'm told theyre good but I don't have one... Or an iPad lol

I do have an iPhone with an otterbox and I got some window mounts for it shipped from the states, maybe there's something similar?

We used an iPad for navigation around Australia, did 15,000 miles including a lot of off road including fast corrugated roads that try and shake every thing to bits for hours on end. We used a solid Ram mount, screwed to the dashboard and it never had a problem or missed a beat.

Originally we'd planned to use one of the bendy arm Ram mounts but when testing it in the UK we found that it was fine on tarmac but off road it caused all sorts of problems as the oscillations built up. We even had to turn on the orientation lock it was bouncing around so much !

You can't really see the mount but it has a ball joint at each end of an arm, the pic shows it in the lowest position, flat against the dash. It can be moved higher and also tilted towards the driver as required.

I use my phone daily in the car, and it's just in a solid mount (made from Lego) on the dashboard, seems to be doing fine.

I doubt you'd stress it enough to make any solder joints come loose or anything. And as was said, all storage in it is solid state, so no hard drive to crash.

Thanks all. That's reassuring. It'll mostly be on road for the time being, but point taken about the bendy arm and off road situations. I may have to modify more at that point - a bracket to secure the arm nearer the mount end may do the job then.

i've just got a UN9U Ram mount for my ipad, i think its an-amazing piece of kit really well made and very functional fixing and unfixing the ipad but not perticualy cheap.

To do with the bendy arm or ball joints it seams there are different sizes of ball joint the 1" ball is suppose to be light use upto 5lb and rugged use upto 2lb. So technically with an ipad and the un9u mount it should be ok but it doesn't sound like it is. So the next size is 1.5 inch ball and is good for 10lb light use and 5lb rugged use.......anyway i manage to order the smaller one because i didn't know that there where larger ones seams mudstuff only do the 1inch ball.

After messing about with various cheap mounts and diy solutions I bought a RAM mount for my tablet, they really are superb bits of kit and well worth the money.

Plenty of dedicated holders and mounting options.

I bought from RAM UK direct, ordered on line in the evening and got an email at 7;15 am to say it was dispatched, turned up the day after.

I went for the 1.5 ball mounting as it will take more weight and seemed a bit more suited to a Land Rover.

This seems to be the only photo I have, that's not me in the drivers seat.
