Drill bits from Triple x Trading Ltd at the LRO show..?

We all work offshore. On drilling rigs.

On ours we start by drilling a 36" hole and 17,000 + ft later end up with a 6". Multiple drills are used running liner 'pipes' for different sections.

The monkey board is where the derrickman works in the derrick (tower). Generally about 100ft up.

Yup...

For various reasons, we've started with a 42" hole.

Some facts for a chuckle...:

Our Topdrive (a pillar drill with 120ft stroke) can rotate happily at 30,000ftlbs of torque.

The drill string which connects the top equipment to the drill bit can handle 60,000ftlbs of torque.

The Derrick can lift 1,000 tons.

The pumps can supply 1,500gallons per minute of fluid at up to 7,500psi.

A drill bit can cost £60,000, is disposable usually.. and if we get it wrong, can be wrecked in a few feet.

As Gordon says, the bottom of the hole can be 17,000ft away although the one I'm on at the moment has drilled to 34,000ft.

Sorry for straying... But you asked!

You're offshore at the moment, drilling a 34,000ft hole into the earth.

I don't know what part of that isn't fan-blo+dy-tastic.

I don't think I'll complain next time I have to dig a post hole ;)

Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

Mike

60,000 is cheap for a modern drill bit especially a 12 1/4 PDC, just been running a 8 1/2 Kymera bit (2 cones plus a PDC blade, very odd looking) worked well but over 150,000.

The costs are justified as rigs rent typically cost 150,000 to 350,000 per day depending on spec and contract and then there is crew and other running costs it can take a day to get out the hole and back in again to change the bit (a lot more from 34,000ft!) so pay a bit more and don't have to change the bit.

17,000ft is a pretty common sort of depth, probable the higher end of average, 34,000ft is something a bit special drilled into the high 20's but not that far, where abouts are you, haven't seen a well that long in the North sea for a while?. On most holes the hole is vertical to start with then turns and runs at high angle or horizontal to follow the oil sometimes actively tracking the formation to stay in the oil bearing rocks.

Ah... The last well this rig drilled was in the Gulf of Mexico, that was the 34kft one.... We are currently offshore Egypt, about to start HPHT.

I don't work for the Rig Owner, I'm a Global Equipment Specialist for an Operator... (Cue lots of guffaws and name calling! )

I enjoy it. This year alone I've been to China, India, Tanzania, Texas (x2), Singapore (x2), Holland, Calgary....

  • 2 weeks later...

Without trying to sound like the eternal know all, but why on earth would you buy these sort of gimmick tools you find on these stands at just about every show? Unless it appears in some sort of reputable shop then I don't touch it.

It's a bit like buying Britparts out of the back of a yellow van at Peckham market.....

It's QVC JML syndrome, I "occasionally watch" 10mins of QVC on diy on a Sunday for a giggle and once or twice have caught myself going "ooooooo.... that's nice". A slap with a wet haddock soon sorts it though  .

It's worse at shows, where a live demo can drag you in. I still have a JML turbo drain snake thingy  and some dodgy measuring jugs..... .... but enough of that.

Nige

PS Give me a time so I can watch and snigger [private joke on] Mr Calleesumbperthrope (or whatever that name was to the courrier [/private joke off]

Considering it's coming up on Google as the fourth hit (on my Google search page anyway) I'm not surprised. If we keep talking about it then it will keep going up the chart.

I say lets make it number 1 for christmas!

We just need to keep talking about Triple X trading and up it will go...

So just typing triple x trading on here like this, "triple x trading" is all it takes to push triple x trading up Google's search list when you search for triple trading by typing triple x trading onto the google search box?

This thread will soon be the tip item for triple x reading searches then :-o

Although you spelt triple x trading correctly in your post about triple x trading, you said the tip item for triple x trading instead of the top item for triple x trading.
