110 Springs - Terrafirma vs Bearmach

Hi,

Looking for some help from 110 owners with similar set-up to me.

I have a reasonably hefty Winch and Bumper, guards, Bonnet mounted spare and additional ancillaries on the engine so I consider the front as 'Heavy'

The rear is reasonably 'Light', Roof rack, dual Jerry cans, 45L aux fuel tank, 3mm bed plate, swing away wheel carrier. So I would class this as Medium Duty.

I'm currently thinking of going for Terrafirma Heavy Duty +50mm Fronts and Medium Duty +50mm Rears. With the intention of getting air helper springs for use when loading the rear.

Hoping this will give me a level comfortable truck for normal driving, without the need for caster correction and use the helpers to level it back out when loaded or towing.

Thoughts? Is Bearmach a better offering (they have lots of choice but doesn't make a great deal of sense)

Hmmm ! !

I use Genuine Land Rover springs.

Loaded to well over the legal limit I've had no problems.

I don't have a winch fitted but I know Land Rover make and supply good heavy duty front springs for use with a winch

Incidently what is the weight of your 110 as it is ?

I got genuine land rover springs on mine, HD ones at the front, I did have normal ones but I got a husky superwinch and a spare on the bonnet so I changed them to HD ones and its much better now. On the rear I got normal 110 springs.

The spring colour codes are.

Front pass yellow/white NRC9449

Front drivers red/blue NRC9448

Rear white/green/green RKB500300 (if you are using it for heavy loads I'd go purple/brown RKB101111)

The spring I got are the latest spec that landrover use on new defenders, and I used genuine as I get them for free.

The "technical datas" Terrafirma and others are stating by saying "+50mm" are just rubbish IMHO. OME for example give the correct datas by stating spring capacity and unloaded length.

+50 mm compared to what? I bought a pair of light duty rear springs for my '97 110 CSW. I found what seemed like "real" data on them and they were the same as the OME springs on my old One Ten, 270 lbs/inch.The result was that they made the rearend lower than the genuine Td5 springs I had on...

I know what you mean, I have reasonably reliable data for what the standard ride height for mine should be...but I'm trying to stay away from working it out from spring rates...as it's easy to go wrong if you get one wrong bit of info...would rather know what people have fitted and do the exact same :)

my 110 rides on OME springs 751 up front & 755 on the back, husky winch & bumper up front.

Quickly looked them up on Devon...look great but pretty pricey! On-top of the rest of the build I'm looking in the region of £200 max ideally

Careful with Devon

They didn't know what yellow/ yellow spreings were. They tried to tell my daughter, who rang up for me, that they only did one yellow spring.

Trying to find a side on shot of mine laded prooved fruitless

In this one it's only part laden I would think about 2,800kg....

No winch you notice

WE like the ride both laden and nearly empty.

Front springs are yellow/ yellow. HD but not winch HD

The rears are red/ green with 130 helper springs and 130 rear shocks.

You haven't said what you are going to use your 110 for. If to travel abroard then I suggest Land Rover Genuine springs. You should be able to get those anywhere.

had mine for over 10 years, got them from Chris Bashall of Surrey offroad, can't remember what I paid for them, as I bought the matching OME dampers too.

Mike, the height of the rear on yours looks about right, ideally 1" higher than that, and matching on the front would be ideal.

I am planning on using it for overlanding, but it will also be my daily so needs to handle laden and empty! I don't ask for much eh?

Bit more hunting...and re-reading peoples thoughts...think I'm going to go for the same set-up that Chris above has and keep the helper spring set-up in reserve. If I buy the springs from paddock will I end up with Britpart??

Helper Springs being RRC3266, and RRC3355 and RRC3352 for the retainers. Is this the better way to get the heavily laden assist, or are air helper springs better?

Ah just read the RKB101111 are progressive, so shouldn't really need them

I have an early hardtop (probably one of the lightest 110s on the road!) which travels empty most of the time and when I go overland I like to go light too. I fitted a set of Terra firma medium duty springs during my rebuild but even with the complete body on they did not compress even a little bit. Much to firm for my liking. Hate to think what the HD ones are like. Anyway, I removed the springs before I even drove the thing and replaced them with purple/brown genuines and even though these are still stiff they are a lot better on my truck.

Anyway, if you should choose the Terrafirma Medium duty springs I have a pair of unused rears here, bought brand new and used only on a rolling chassis (so a few chips to paint).

Yes I like the way mine is set-up.

The helper springs raised the back by 3 inches

Get Genuine springs from Land Rover, tyhen you know what you are getting

My idea was to only use the helper springs when needed. Now they stay on all the time.

I fitted Bearmach blues as I happened to buy in a Bearmach shop. My old springs were sagging esp at the front with a a winch on. I asked for standard springs but ended up with around a 1.5" lift, it does look better for it but I don't run so heavy now and the rears are a bit hard so I may have to find some lower rated rears.

Interesting thread, as I have the same issue at present.

My 110 looks like a dragster, the front is sagging and the rear sitting right up.

The truck carrys little load in the rear, though the front has a winch and bumper plus guards, etc and is lower than I like.

With the truck on the floor, the nearside spring length is 9", the offsise is 9.5", that make the front 2.25" lower than the rear, measuring the floor to top of wheelarch at the wheel centre.

So I guess I'm looking for a loaded spring length of around 11", does that sound about right to the masses here? And if it does, and you have this loaded spring length, what spring combination have you on the front? I take it you have similar front mounted equipment....
