Nissan 6 Cyl. diesel engine into 110

Bonjour All,

I have been offered a totally rotten rolling 110 chassis with a Nissan 6 Cyl diesel engine & LT77 gearbox attached to it.

Having had the Mazda 3.5 Tdi in the past, I like engine conversions but Nissan is new to me.

Please, tell me about this as I'm sure people on this great forum will know more !

Not sure what type it is - I hope to get more info this weekend.

Size wise, being a 6-pot, how difficult are they to fit in a 110 ?

In NZ a company named forward specs offered this conversion (Nissan LD28) into a defender and mated them to LT77s I believe. I think they were contracted by the NZ Air Force to fit out their 110s . There was one for sale on trademe.co.nz not long ago.

Common to see series trucks with them here too. Great motors, some folks have had success turbo-ing them

Yup, like Josh said, it was a common bastar...conversion here in NZ to stick an LD28 in a 90/110 or even a Series Land Rover. It works because the motors rev fairly well but they are really noisy! They must fit ok because there were many done and few reported problems if done well.

I'd like to have a bit more power than the 300 Tdi can deliver and ideally I'd fit a Mazda again but they are not easy to find these days..

I really, really miss my 110 CSW with the Mazda and ZF ......

Seller thinks it is mated to a LT77...

I would guess that the one fitted in the car is a 3,3 and the spare one is a 2,8. I've owned a 2,8 and IMO they are absolutely gutless heavy beasts. But the 3,3 should be a bit better in the grunt department. Won't beat a 300 tdi there though. BUT they do run smoother and rev extremely nicely for a diesel.

And the spare gearbox is definitely an LT77 with LT230 T-box fitted

The only one worth considering is the TD42 the others are old fashioned , and a not particularly powerful. The 3.3 was pretty reliable ,and long lived but they cant hold a candle to a 300tdi. The td42 as mentioned by previous poster was a good lump a little bit thirsty ,but plenty of torque . There were a few problems with people after market turboing the n/a engine , pistons tended to melt ! HTSH

I have one in my 110 at present which I want to replace.

Only problem is it breathes 3 litres of oil for 500 miles running.

I reckon a set of rings would cure it, but as M&D quoted me about £680 for a set of rings and required gaskets, £980+VAT gets a full rebuild kit including pistons, liners etc.

Still goes well enough that I know a Tdi wouldn't cut it.

I've driven the LD28 in a Land Rover and can confirm it's not a a conversion you'd use for power, though it is flexible and can get up some speed, if your ears can take it. It doesn't have a TDi's terrible turbo lag though.

The Aussies used an Isuzu 3.9 in some of their Land Rovers so a range of Isuzu motors could be an easy fit. My parents had a 2.8 in their camper van which was a nice engine. However, if you are used to the Mazda and like it, that sounds like the way to go. The quote above for a rebuild kit might work out to be quite good value?

Some years ago a mate fitted the SD33 into an 88" hardtop. In fact he used the entire Nissan drive train, giving excellent disk brakes to slow him down. That truck didn't pull well!

That engine was beautifully smooth and powerful sounding, and revved most willingly.

Depending on what route you want to go, best options

1. Cummins BT4 or BT6

2. BMW or Merc 3ltr

1. is a more truck like drive 2, is a more car like

other engine options larger capacity Izuzu or Iveco , the ivecos seem to suffer from blowby , oil leak at relatively low miles compared with other JMHO

Thanks - more food for thought... Hmm....

Want to try and stay away from ECU's and the likes as we go to remote places with not always good fuel..

Pref. 4 cyl. me thinks having now seen the 6 cyl from a BMW in Stage One and there is not a lot of space left ..

Cummins is about 104 BHP ????? That does not sound a lot when looking for more power, sole & towing, and a wee bit of speed. Cruising at 70-75 mph would be nice..

A 13BT could be worth a look. 3.4 turbo, direct injection. They make around 110/120hp in stock form depending on the version. Heated intake instead of glow plugs.

A little on the clattery side being DI but good strong motors otherwise.
