Can you use a diesel fuel filter to filter petrol?

Hi,

Quick question, hopefully a simple answer.

I've got a 2.25 petrol series 3 and i want to add a proper fuel filter in addition to the standard sediment bowl on the fuel pump. I could just stick an inline filter on but hate the bloody things when you have to change them.

I have on the shelf a discovery 300tdi fuel filter housing, would it be ok to use this with a new filter? I can't see any reason why not but it seems a bit strange that the fuel filter has "diesel filter" written on it rather than "fuel filter" or am i reading too much into it?

Thanks

Dave

The only thing I can think of is diesel is thicker than petrol so the filtering may not be that fine with a diesel filter.

Well i had thoughts along the lines of the filtering element may have different properties but when you consider the diesel filter has to prevent anything small enough to block a diesel injector needle going through, it ought to be ok to filter petrol for a very basic carburettor engine.

Anything has to be better than just the standard sediment bowl on the fuel pump.

Cheers guys
