I've found Les' 'how to' on 300 tdi Disco starter motor removal, but want to know if it's basically the same in a 200 defender??

All I get when turning the key is a quick clicking sound... It's not the battery as I've changed it and also tried jumping it off of the works car, so I'm guessing it needs a bit of attention.

Also, is it possible to rebuild/recondition the starter at home, or will it need to be sent away to a specialist?? I have a couple of spares that can be combined, but haven't got any manuals yet...

Adrian speak to Adrian about it. He has a contact that does it cheap. Did mine about 18mths ago.

It's pretty straight forward.

Disconnect battery -ve

Remove exhaust downpipe from the turbo (You can do the job with it on, but why make your life more difficult)

Remove solenoid wire

Remove main +ve feed/alternator etc.

Remove 3 bolts/studs holding the starter. These can be tight and access is difficult. IIRC one needed a spanner, with another spanner to get leverage. The others needed combinations of short and long extensions on a ratchet.

It's heavy and watch the brake lines when manoeuvering it out.

It might be that the bendix is sticking, so that can be cleaned up. As for further refurbishment, I don't know.

I speak with some knowledge on this subject...

For this job in particular, you DO need to disconnect the battery. You need to drop the downpipe to get any access. Once that is done, remove the connections on the solenoid (13mm spanner and one spade terminal). The starter is held in with one nut on a stud, one bolt and one nut and bolt. They are all 17mm A/F. You will find it easier with extension bars on the ratchet.

Once the starter is out you should look most carefully at the brushes/commutator. They are located under the end cap of the motor - opposite end to the pinion. The motor is not old (not even quite old!) so it is likely to be a simple problem with the motor. The battery was always my prime suspect - I am surprised you are not getting any result from another. As I said to you, I have a new solenoid somewhere which I will send on with new pads and other spares.

Not unusually, I have a spare in the shed which you can either try as an answer to your question 'is it my starter ?' , or pull apart to learn how to refurb it yourself.

Am around at the weekend.

You could always talk to Del at Bearmach and get yourself a shiney new one in exchange for many of your English pounds ;)

I bought a Bosch starter, and have been relieved of earache ever since :P

Cheers for the ofers, chaps!! Spares isn't an issue... I have 3 in the garage courtesy of Mr Watts. It was more a case of how to get it off and whether it was possible to refurb one myself (from a learning how to do it perspective) as I might as well try to get at least one good spare on the shelf out of the 3 on the floor!!
