You can get the genuine HS from Wyko if you have one near you - they are even cheaper than the LR suppliers.

IIRC there are two different HS on the defender - I think the fronts are different to backs.....

I understand (have read on a forum somewhere) that the seals with metal reinforcing are the visible sign of a Heavy Duty HS joint, possibly more resistant to damage when operating in mud and gunge.

However, a prudent person would ask the question of HS, not rely on someone on t'internet.

If it's true then it's down to a purchaser to decide what price premium is worth paying for them.

To be honest I would much rather listen to somone with experience with both types on here than take HS word for it when they are obviously going to big up their own HD product compared to the standard part.

The metal covered seals I would imagin are good as when you over fill standard ones the rubber seals pop out. So with that in mind I would imagin the metal covered seals would keep the rubber in place when they get a hard time off road.

Anyone know if they are really worth the difference in money?

One is nominated "Hardy Spicer 1300" and the other is "Hardy Spicer 1300 HD", one is U110 and the other is U967.

I can't tell what's the difference apart the seal reinforcement.

there are 2 diameters of bearing cup used on 90/110 depending on VIN IIRC & the metal covers for the seals, go for the version with the covers if you get into really mucky places, if it's all hard surface then go for the other version [no metal seal covers].

In the table I gave the link to I could find:

- the smaller UJs: cup diameter D= 23.8 mm and the length across two opposite cups L= 61.3 mm

- the bigger UJs: D= 27 mm, L= 74.5 mm

Marcus, the ones you indicated in the 1st post of this thread are the "bigger" ones. Somewhere else, in another thread, you said you need the "smaller" ones.

Which type do you need for the front prop shaft currently fitted to your LR? You can measure the old UJs to be sure.

The cups are the same size arent they? I managed to put the UJ I had in the prop and only found it was the wrong one when the cups wouldnt go in deep enough to get the cerclips in. (and its not from a roller falling over)

I have bog UJs on the rear prop and it seems now I need the small UJs on the front prop. My front prop was changed by a garage a couple of years ago and they didnt mention that they didnt change it for a standard 1985 90 type. I dont know what it is but the Large UJs dont fit.

And about the ones at the start of this thread. they are the smaller ones.... for the later chassis numbers

By the way. just to make things clear. this thread was about two different HS UJs andt he price difference (now I know its becuase one is HD and the other is standard) The other talks about different UJs is the fact that I have a prop that takes the smaller type UJs and only have 2 of the bigger types in hand.

Hmm, then the bigger/smaller combination is this (both having the same cup diameter D= 27 mm):

- bigger/longer type, L= 81.7 mm (VIN# before CA254406 for example RTC3458)

- smaller type, like the ones in the 1st post, L= 74.5 mm

This is a timely post resurrection.

Drove home Friday and developed a sharp, resonant, pinging/grating noise from the drive train. At first I thought it would be a UJ as the noise was not unlike tapping the propshaft with a spanner.

Inspected it this morning and there is no movement in any of the UJs.

Short story is that having convinced myself it was forward of the transfer box and suspecting the diff I disconnected the propshaft. After failing to reproduce the noise in the diff I tried turning the propshaft and then noticed that one of the axis of the front UJ was seized solid. I can't even move it in the vice.

Great, problem found so fit the spare prop.........B****r, that one is also seized.

Better go find a box of UJs.

So word of warning........ twisting, pulling and pushing does not a FUBARed UJ find.

And one more measurement. This is the same UJ as in my first comparison.

Now we have "full picture". There are at least 3 different GKN UJ's all with different niddle diametr, lenght and quontity.

The question is: which is the better between UJ's from "green box"?
