Spy Shots - A very special Td5 turbo

There have been a few threads on Td5 turbo options in the past... and one thing that gets brought up quite often is the use of VNT (variable nozzle turbos) and the benefits they should bring. The down side is the need for a custom exhaust manifold, modified exhaust down pipe, modified oil pipes - and which turbo to use - making sure it's matched to the requirements and characteristics of the Td5 engine.

Until now that is....

Here are a couple of pictures of the first prototype - from the outset, this turbo is designed for the Td5:

So it bolts straight onto the standard exhaust manifold, uses a standard exhaust downpipe, standard air intake pipe work - literally a bolt on conversion.

But more importantly... it is designed exclusively for the requirements and flow rates of the Td5 engine. It is not one off another vehicle modified to suit a Td5 - which may be far from ideal.

More details will follow (as still early days), but initial indications are looking promising. Even on a standard map (on an otherwise standard Defender), the turbo makes quite a difference. It makes more boost from much lower RPM, and the speed at which it makes boost when on the go is nothing but amazing!!!

However....

When remapped to make use of the increased boost pressures at lower RPM.... :o that's when the fun begins!

Although still early days, and we have 'A LOT' more testing to do before the turbo and various 'map' options will be ready for sale.... all I can say is that it will be worth the wait!!!

In the mean time the company who are making the turbo, Pete Bell and myself have quite a bit more work to do!!!

You've got to build the 110 first

/reality mode/

yeah, s'pose your right...... :(:(

why let a little detail like that get in the way though?:lol:

I'd like one for the 300 as and when it appears Thanks

How about the one off the 2.8HS engine ?

That'd be as close as you could get without specifically mapping one for the 300tdi and it's available, just use the 2.8 exhaust manifold as well.

It's a Garrett GT2256V G 724652-0001E

If they are of any use, Here are some pics of the vnt turbo from a 2.8l that I fitted to the 300Tdi in my rangie. They show the markings on the compressor and turbine housings.

When I get a chance, this turbo will go on the 300Tdi in my disco. The rangie is getting an Isuzu diesel with Borg Warner R2S compound turbo (later turbo technology than VNT).

I definitely want one of these unless it costs eleventy million pounds.

Ah, i heard it was eleventy million and 5 pounds.

Any idea of price yet Ian?

It has always been my opinion that LR made a mistake not fitting a VNT turbo to the TD5 in the first place. After all, they were available when the engine was designed. It will get rid of most of the turbo latency that drivers complain about. I am definitely interested with the Tdi conversion when it happens, though I may have to travel to the uk to get it and smuggle it back in my hand luggage!

Not knowing much about VNT's, so excuse dumb questions but what sort of difference would you get on a standard TD5? How much lower does this turbo kick in? Current one comes in about 1300rpm and seems to have full boost about 15-1600rpm.

Does it offer more boost throughout or is it just lower down? Is it worth fitting without a tune?

If you fit with a tune are you soon into 200bhp+, 300 ft-lbs+ territory?

The reason I ask is to see if it would be better to go for a new turbo over tuning a standard TD5. However, if that means you need a tune too and are now into gearbox, clutch and transmission breaking realms I'll give it a miss and probably just go for a normalish ;) remap to standard TD5.

Cheers

Steve

(This is what my understanding is of what you said, i might be wrong, but here goes....)

If you change a turbo, be it swap in a piddle little one or a huge great truck engine one, the overall power output of the engine need not be changed, as long as the boost is set to the same pressure as the old turbo then power will be the same.

drivability will change, as a large turbo will have lots of lag while you wait for it to produce enough pressure to make a difference to the engines performance. conversely a small one will "spin up" faster but run out of puff before you hit the rev limiter of the engine.

so fitting the VNT one should make "on boost" performance come in at a lower RPM, helping pulling away and other low speed stuff, and the vanes being variable will enable the turbo to still give good results higher up the rev range,

as long as the boost pressure is still the same, then i don't see why a remap to give more power is needed (although i suspect you'll need a remap to enable the engine to pump in more fuel at lower RPM's to make use of the extra low down turbo boost)

Hi

The final torque/bhp and pressure figures will be posted as soon as we have finished it and tested on the dyno.

We do really hope for bigger torque lower down than standard considering i can produce 313lbs/ft @ 2530rpm from a normal TD5 hybrid turbo with my stage 2 remap on..

The driveability with the VNT over the standard turbo is like chalk and cheese, it drives much much nicer pulling gears with ease over the standard setup

Hi guys.

Looks like a very nice and well engineered setup,

Have had mine fitted for about 15000k now and can tell you that I will never go back to a waste-gated turbo EVER EVER EVER,

Obviously mine is a little different to yours as it's made for my 2.8 TD5 and 1.8 Bar boost but you are dead right in saying Chalk and Cheese ;);)

Good luck, am sure the kit will sell like hot cakes.

Lara.

Ditto...another 300Tdi here,

interested as far as full bolt on-no fuss :)

a ballpark price would be good too,in order to start robbing around er saving €€€

Just to add for some response,

Would any of you be interested in a Switching remap EG 2 maps inside one ecu with a switch to enable the map of your choice ?

One for the wife and one for you sort of thing loool

Regards Pete

Switching maps sounds interesting, perhaps one for when you want to eat chavs for breakfast and go silly fast (or perhaps comp safari) and one for slower more technical stuff when you want lots of torque, but not stupid amounts??

Either way i want one of those turbo's for my D-Lander....and soon!!!

Yes these are along my thaughts also eg, comp safari V mild or tricky ,the main thing is that hopefully you will have the choice of remaps and be able to switch it when needed. While the engine is running

I suppose the limits are endless to the variations that are possibile with it.

With some final testing i will have the first ever switching TD5 finished this week so ill let you all know how it goes.

Regards pete
