1" 2" 3" 4" 5" Lifts - but over what eaxctly

Recommended Posts

Had a muppet someone  round tonight saying 90 handled awfull, went out with him

and I had to agree, that was whilst trying not to puke within the said 90 flaying all over the road

F knows what lift is on it, but it handles like a drunk pig on rollerblades, and told him as much

however look as I might I am stumped as to what lift it acually has

So, me question to the forum is simple, where you have a 1 2 3 4 5 inch lift, what eaxctly is the measurement over

"standard" where is it taken from, and more importantly WTF is it as well so I can work it out  ?

Yours green and trying to keep din dins in

The only 'offical' published figures I've seen are in the WSM for a 110 with Boge SLD, where the test for suspension height is for the gap between bump stop and axle pad on the rear axle to be in excess of 67mm in running trim.

I would guess measuring between spring platforms would be the best way.

The stock measurement was floating around on here, as i've used it for spring rate calculations before, but iirc it was around 8-9" on the front. Perhaps someone else can confirm that though.

I 'think' the figure I worked with was 75mm - it is on the board in the workshop so I'll check.... Anyway, I measured it off my parents' standard 110 CSW which seems to sit at a nice standard looking height.

I've yet to get authorative 'standard height' compressed lengths but 10-10.5 inches front and 11-12 inches rear is the best estimate I've got so far

10" compressed length on a 15" 175lb spring means theres about 875lb on each front spring, giving a front axle weight of 795kgs (plus any unsprung weight, ie the axle etc) which doesnt sound tooo far from stock?

i was told 10" front and 11" rear for a standard 90 tdi using standard non saggy genuine springs when i asked the same question of my local landy specialist many moons ago.

Thats certainly what i have based all my calcs on when changing springs on my 90.

The best way to measere your lift is to measure your spring hights with the

vehicle parked on level ground, measure from top to botom of the rear of the

front spring, and the same for the rear spring, with quality springs you will

find that the drivers side is always slightly taller

STD 90/110 FRONT SPRING measures 260mm +/- 5 mm

The REAR SPRING should be around 300 mm +/- 10mm

STD Disco/RRc FRONT SPRING measures 250 mm +/- 5 mm

The REAR SPRING should be around 300 mm +/- 10mm

These measurments are what i have taken over the years to calculate what lift

you have got or havent got

From the standard measurments you can calculate what lift you have got

Hope this will help what you need

sorry if this is a stupid question, but once you have identified 'if' and 'how high'. What are you going to do to fix the handling?

Cause i have a 2" lift on my 90 and it drives fine (as can be expected) no problems motorway, a-roads, off road and 2" seems standard for a lift. So they will drive no probs with 'a lift', is knowing the lift hight the issue, or could it be more wheel balancing, offset, play in the steering, steering box on its way out, track rods etc?

just food for thought.

Erm,

4.25 ins to be precise :(

Heap

Told matey to remove the lift kit spring blocks and have given him a set of sh spring to fit

which he is doing this weekend, has sold the silly too big tyres too, and has bought some insa turbos

frankly for the money he paid for it, it could be decent, a chav has been at it  and I knew it was too high but until gwyn came along with the measurements didn't know how high, I have also plasmad off the abortion that was a front winch bumper and done a host of welding to it

but it could do prob next year with a full cross member, but a 300 tdi for £2750 is cheap methinks, the roof rear door don't match rest of 90, colour wise (guessing prang) but he's going to TC it anyways

Ta for the help

I had 250/310 on the 90 stock and 220/280 on my Disco. I always thought stock Discos were an inch or so lower than Defenders.
