King Cab Cage

Recommended Posts

Just a few pics of a King Cab 90 we have just built a cage for, main problem was that i couldn't put a cross diagonal in on the hoop or inside the cab because the client wanted to be able to open the rear window. So i think we made the best of a hard job.

We also modded the existing rock sliders and made a rear winch mount mounted within the rear cage.

well putting 2 and 2 together

Ths is Treeblokes new steed!

I was wondering about the registration on his BDB06 form.

looking forward to seeing it in the flesh in a week or so.

any better pics of the tree slliders?

Sorry Tony no more pics, they were i think bearmach/britpart items that i basicaly added a tube down each side but not stepped out like EVERYONE else does, but bent and cut the ends of the tubes and welded the directly to the sliders.

The photos certainly show how the back window requirement has compromised the strength and angles of the cage. A good compromise though and the quality looks superb, neatly integrated with the rear winch. I look forward to seeing it in the flesh next week.

Cage work is ok,i have just got a new lad started with me part time, i let him help with the bending and welding, his welding is good but as for bending, lets just say the scrap bin is full of LONG off cuts :o:angry:;) paint work is always hard when the cage is fully welded to the chassis.

Hmmm, is your scrap bin kept outside Chris...?

No reason...

Er... where are you based again?

 Al

P.S. - looks as good as could be under the circumstances (the window).

Al

I tryed my best to change his mind ,but the man with the money is always right!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

The lad that owns the above is a real nice bloke so we tryd our best to come up with a good setup.

I must admit that i find it very hard what to do when it comes the the client wanting different things done with the cage, the problem is when it comprimises the design what do you do????????????? Safety MUST be the 1st importance but sometimes some clients just dont want to listen. In the case of the above the cage is as strong as we can go without blocking the inner and outer window shut,we even went up to 3.2 wall CDS to help regain some strength.

Yeah sure. Without getting too metaphysical about it all, in the end every cage is a compromise given the limitations of what you're building / cramming in, of course.

If we all drove the same thing, this would be a hell of a dull forum. If you have improved the safety of the vehicle significantly (i.e. enough to justify the cost), and made it as safe as you reasonably can given peoples 'individualities' then what more can you do?

As you say, it's a money driven business, not a theoretically optimised paper-based calculation! You can tell him why something isn't a good idea (lead the horse to water), but you can't make him keep his window shut if he wants it open (make him put down the crack pipe and take a drink)... ;)

I realise you know all this - just chewin' the fat...

I guess it's best just to enjoy working round the different requirements of each one, knowing that no cage is ever 'perfect'...? Life might get pretty boring anyway if you just churned out the same thing all the time?

I'm only typing all this cos I'm currently compromising the carp out of mine, and I'm pre-empting the e-beating I'm gonna get when I post the pics! :D

 Now, when you say 'long' off-cuts, how long is 'long' exactly...? For example, if some thieving git had a long-wheelbase Defender and happened to be in the area, might these tubes fit in the back?

Al.

Looks good! Rob is a lucky chap!

I'll have to try not to show him up next week!

Si

Si - You can show me the way to the pub.

I am well chuffed with the cage. Chris did the best for the situation, I know its not how he wanted it to be but, I am grandad and do most of my off roading with a grandmother and we do not take quite as many chances these days as the whipper snappers so I am happy with the finished result. I am sure it would give me the amount of protection I need.

Well done Chris, good workmanship, terrible time keeping, get a calendar (only joking, I know you had some problems).
