Breathalysers in France

Recommended Posts

Driving Through France Be Aware

From 1 July 2012, it will be a legal requirement for all moroists (including visitors) in France to carry an NF- approved disposable breathalyser in the vehicle.

The on the spot fine for not carrying a breathalyser is 11Euros. The French police will show lenency until 1 November.

You can buy the kits from most French supermarkets for aproximatley 1.5- 2 Euros

Most breathalysers have a shelf life of two years so be aware of use by dates.

Of course, one cannot get from the ferry to the supermarché without going on the road. Breathalysers will be £10 on the ferry and the plod will be hanging round outside the docks...

You sound like you've had dealings with Mr Franco-Plod too then Chris? In my experience they'd fine you for being British if they could!

FYI - they wont actually start fining people until December (its a standard 6 month grace).

I live 1km from the French border, and cross it on a daily basis. Personnaly i'm considering not carrying the breatalyser, just taking the 11 Euro fine. It will probably be cheaper in the end.

Anyway i just dont get the point of this... Are the garlic rozzers seroiusly going to ask you to use your unit rather than theirs in some cost cutting measure? ;)

Theres been a whole rash of stupid new laws in France in the last few years.. First carrying of the hi-vis (in the cabin, not the boot - yes i know who've been fined that way), then requiring hi-vis on motorcylces at all times :angry2: despite the fact that my jacket has nice reflective bits built in which are duly covered up by the flapping & dangerous hi-vis.

I'm also a diver, and you shouldnt start me on what they've done regarding diving....

p.s if anyone does need some of these things before travelling i could arrange to send some over.
