6x6 Defender Conversion DVLA VOSA etc.

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I have been contemplating converting my Defender 130 Double Cab Hi-Cap to 6x6.

I have serched the internet until my eyes hurt and I have now spent 2 to 3 hours on the phone trying to get someone to give me a deffinative answer.

I have had issues with DVLA/VOSA in the past with the registration of a Defender I built using parts from different vehicle etc, I fell foul of the points system with a technicallity.

However my 130 Is all original with exception of the engine. so what rules do I need to conform to to be able to convert to 6x6 and retain my vehicle identity?

And who else would need to be informed if anyone?

Thanks in advance....

I believe you'll lose points on the chassis as it will no longer be like for like, if you keep the 4 door crewcab, the new 6x6 chassis will have to be longer in the rear to accommodate the 3rd axle/& associated suspension. & therefore the 6x6 when done should have a IVA. as the chassis although not modified is different from the original 4x4 chassis

besides DVLA/VOSA, your Insurance co will want to know about the changes.

Thanks for the fast replies guys but thats where it becomes a little bit of a grey area that I cant get the answer for.

As I would not replace the chassis, I would make the alterations to the original chassis as per Foley does them. Thisway I am retaining the original chassis...

If you read the rulebook with regards to rebuilt vehicles and radically altered vehicles it make no mention of the chassis modification making a difference to the point scoring. Only that if you use a second hand chassis it instantly becomes a 'Q' Plate. And if you replace the chassis it must be new and like for like as supplied by Land Rover, Marsland, Designa chassis etc.

My understanding is that if you use all new components ie chassis mounts, trailing arms, axle, brakes and springs etc and to preformed sections to make the chassis extension of 40" that i should not affect the points yet again?

As for SVA or IVA unless I am after altering the Maximum Gross Vehicle Weight there should not be any need for an inspection? Even as far as the MOT is concerned as long as the fitted components have been professionally installed and the meet brake test requirements that should be ok.

For insurance I am covered by a traders policy so as long as I tell them what I have done they cover me for anything.

Old Hand thanks for your approval :)

The reason for the 6x6 is for the load space. With the extension it will give me 9 feet in length in the rear of the Hi-Cap which will also eliviate the need for a seperate van, camper etc.

Another reason is that during winter snow time I am registered to the local council for plowing/Gritting with this truck so the extra length will allow me to make the Hi-Cap de mountable and fit a grit bin.

Interesting question and answer session with VOSA here http://www.the-ace.org.uk/chassis-and-monocoque-modification/

pasted here

VOSA have provided the following response to your questions;

Chassis.

Q) What is classed as chassis? Is it purely the outer longitudinal rails or are the crossmembers between these also a part of the chassis?

A) Chassis should be taken to include crossmembers.

Q) We know that cutting or shortening a chassis is classed as modification but is this relative to the vehicle wheelbase i.e. the chassis must remain uncut between the 2 axles but anything forward of front or aft of rear suspension mounts can be removed?

A) Chassis includes the full original length of the longitudinal members including to the front of the front axle and to the rear of the rear axle.

Q) Is it acceptable to remove bodymounts, which contribute no strength to the chassis when changing a body to a different style /make?

A) Yes, providing they are additional to and are not an integral part of the chassis structure.

Q) Is it acceptable to strengthen a chassis by the addition of boxing plates a process that involves turning a 3-sided open chassis rail into a fully enclosed ‘box’ chassis?

See here:

http://www.direct.go...hicle/DG_191068

Specifically:

Your vehicle will need Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA), Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) or Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval (MSVA) if:

  • it has a second hand or altered chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame

So if you alter the chassis, it's IVA time. Doesn't mean you'll get a Q-plate and lose the identity necessarily, but you will need an inspection.

There is debate as to the degree of alteration that is permitted. Fitting a winch rear crossmember for example, or different engine mounts for a conversion. Both of these count as alterations by definition but most would agree that they would be unlikely to call the identity into question. In your case I would go by the literal definition of alteration, adding an extra axle would definitely come under that!

Well I shall see what happens and what information I get back from several sources..

I have emailed Foley Specialist vehicles to see what they do and Penman as they still produce a 6x6 for Fire, police and military.(My vehicle was an ex airport fire engine. )

I am awaiting a responce from

DVLA

VOSA

DofT

and the Construction and Use Dept.

I dont realy want to do it until I have signed written consent lol

Depending on the outcome I have 3 options

Do it all above board, SVA, Retain ID

Do it all above board, SVA, Q Plate

or buy a new chassis, make the mods, galv it, fit it. Save the old chassis to swap back under if they get the hump....

If you are modding the chassis to fit a third axle then you will need to increase the GVW , otherwise you wont be able to carry much more than a bag of grit in the back as all your GVW will be taken up by the new axle and other parts . You will also be moving into more than 3.5 ton cat, do you have a tacho fitted? You will need a SVA as you are altering the chassis . If everything on the vehicle is otherwise original then you should retain the orig reg. which you have shown above , VOSA ? HTSH

PS Re plowing why 6X6 as they work OK 4x4 on a 110, your pretty large for turning already another 40 inchs will not help . JMHO

How would this work:

You build it as a kit car.

Use a new chassis, supplied by richards/designa whoever and use your vehicle, complete, as a donor with the addition of a refurbished rear axle.

You then retain the identity of the donor vehicle.

All the items tested by the IVA test will be covered by the 130's construction as its already legal.

Remember if you upgrade the GVW (which i think you should to make use of the extra axles payload) then it will be classed as an N2 or M2 vehicle and the M1 passenger car IVA standards won't apply.

The guys at VOSA are actually all ok and now udnerstand the requirements pretty well.

I build ambulances and fire engines for a living so deal with IVA/Type approval every day. I also want the funds to make a 6x6 myself, or convert my 110 to a forward control camper!

Better yet, submit it for inspection as a motorhome and take advantage of the Special purpose standards.

I would consider the chassis stresses/ strength very carefully, I,ve seen lwb chassis snap when used heavily loaded.

Without wanting to tiddle on your bonfire or teach you to suck eggs I,d buy the correct tool for the job and have done with it, you wanna be well on top of the job not hovering around the edge.

Buy a mog and keep the 130 useable.

Just my 2p.

Will.

  • 1 month later...

Well in the end I was lucky enough to fall across this for sale....

So I bought it and intend to use it as a rolling project while I build the perfect one :)

hope when you build your own , it turns out prettier than this one !! bend the sheet metal and put some shape into it instead of all the sharp angles this ones got . Turbomangler.

yep that does explain it, what i,m a little confused about now is the fact that about 2 weeks ago one of my posts got some serius critisism, i believe from the moderators, about a reply where "text language " had been used . this critisim was because using bad grammer was setting a bad example to foreign members and younger members !! yet 9 out of 10 posts i read on hear uses abbreviations that i don,t know the meaning of and i,m 100% british and in my 40,s .

so if any moderators are reading this shouldn,t they be critisising this just the same ?? or are there 2 sets of guidelines for this using forum ??

only 1 set of guidelines for all, the acronyms mentioned are accepted internet language & therefore accepted in here.http://www.gaarde.or...onyms/?lookup=I

text messaging language is ultra shorthand for that purpose only, it main use is to keep messages short & the text message costs down & is not used or liked by the majority of phone users.

anyway, lets stick to the thread topic please.

Yes it was exactly as the Dorset fire truck. I have found an old pick of it when it was owned by a company called three shires. On there a member of the six wheel apeal has commented to say it was an ex Dorset unit however I have not been able to find any further information or old photos of when it was in service.
