Tanuki
On my 90TD5 I've noticed an odd wear-pattern on the front tyres. It's running 750/16 General SAGs. On the tread on the inner faces of both front wheels, the tread-blocks are developing a curious stepped pattern. Alternate tread-blocks seem to be wearing down more rapidly than their neighbours. It's the same on both front tyres. The difference is something like 4mm between blocks - enough to create a noticeable rapid 'wubwubwub' sound audible when you have the windows down. Tracking and 4-wheel-alignment has been checked by a friend who has access to the laser-gear used to set up rally-cars and is spot-on. Brakes are fine - I can do a pedal-to-the-metal lock-all-4-wheels stop from 50MPH and it pulls up dead straight without needing to hold the steering. Any ideas about what to check next? Tanuki
what is the tracking set at ? Tracking is 0 degrees. No signs of "death-wobble" or other dynamic issues. No lift or uprated springs or anything. Only change from standard is Bilstein yellow gas shock-absorbers all round. Use is almost entirely on-road, including some trailer-towing. Tyre pressures 32 front 36 rear. Looking at the wear-rate these front tyres are only going to manage 20,000 miles before the inside edges are nuked beyond legality.
steve b
maybe slightly higher tyre pressures would help? 40psi front 45psi back? the SAG is a blocky tread so maybe stiffer tyre walls will help? cheers Steveb
Landy-Novice
sounds like the tires are sawtoothing or cupping. dunno the exact cause. something to do with excess axle oscillation. (aka Donald ducked shocks)
