fearofweapons
Yes I do know the hand brake drum is not made up of layers however I struggled to find another way to describe it! So the other day traveling along an A road at about 50 mph when there was a loud bang and it felt as if something hit the drivers foot well side wall next to the gearbox. At first I thought maybe a nut had come off a prop shaft. However a quick check of both front and rear prop shafts, at the road side, found nothing missing. A similar review of other potential nut / bolt sources could not find anything obviously missing. One suggestion put forward was a stone being spat out from a front wheel. Another was a spring reseating itself after being dislodged during green laning - could be as we had had an odd 'groan' from the front of the vehicle since green laning in Wales a few weeks ago. Not sure I have heard that noise since the bang. What I did notice was the drum for the handbrake had some, big but thin, 'missing' rust flakes on the outside. So the drum is now, very slightly, unbalanced. How dangerous is this? i.e. could the whole thing fragment and fly apart at speed? (realistically what is the chance of this?) Even if being unbalanced is not a major issue given that the drum is starting to come apart do I need to replace it or would a good clean, treatment with anti-rust/rust-converter and paint be enough? As every your considered thoughts and suggestions welcomed in the normal manner! regards, Richard 1989 110 TD
Team Idris
Tap it lightly with a hammer to remove the rest? I normally use a heel bar, as it is light and pointy. It's like the canker that forms around the disks. It's not really the steel that is laminating ( I hope ). S1 threw a fan blade once. That was a fair clank as it hit the diff (then much vibration). I was lucky, as somebody else had theirs go through the bonnet
