89 defender 90 takes ages to warm before start

Recommended Posts

89 is right on the line between the old 19J Td and the 200tdi, the 19j does need lots of glow plug whereas the 200 will fire instantly without them. Just the nature of the engines. If you have a 19j holding for longer than 10 secs will improve starting, I usually count to 20, 30 on cold mornings.

Yup, my 110 originally had a 19J that had to be held at 1/2 turn to fire up the heaters (and it needed a pre-heat!). When I replaced it with a 200TDi I added the timing relay and that meant it timed automatically (although the 200TDi very rarely needed pre-heating anyway)

Cheers

as was my 110, but with the 200tdi I always use the glowplug timer from cold, if it's been running & fully warm then it's jump in & go.
