New, new R380

Anyone know the part number for an R380 to fit a 2005 Td5 Defender? Better yet, anyone know where I might find one for sale - other than Landrover themselves? I am looking for brand new, not 'reconditioned' as I like the idea of another 146,000 miles of service.

Properly reconditioned should do the same. The problem is that most reconditioners skimp by using borderline parts and pattern parts. But any LR specialist should be able to source one through Gen Parts; I got a SIII transmission that way (which had been incorrectly assembled and had a failure after 10,000 miles).

Chris - you might surprise yourself if you ask a main dealer, my IRD was all of about 20% over the price of a "recon" blue-box one from the main dealer. They even did club discount! As, like you, I quite fancied another 150k out of it I felt it worth the bit extra.

not new but shabs only does quality gearboxes. and he only rebuilds your own, not exchange so there is a leadtime. he can make hybrid R380's for big power and long liverty. http://www.syncrogearboxes.com/

I had a similar thought a while back Chris and got a price for a new V8 R380 box from a dealer. Over £4,000... So funnilly enough I didn't go for it!

I know you specify that you don't really want a recon box, but the R380 in mine was a recon unit from Ashcroft. I got it 18 years and over 200,000 miles ago.

With regular oil changes and good quality oil a gearbox should do stellar milaeages. I had another 110 with a 300tdi/r380 combination, from new, and put 350,000 miles on it without any failures. The only thing I did was to shorten the oil change intervals to 10,000 miles for everything in the drive line (apart from the engine which I did at 5,000)
