Edit: yet strangely quick to post...

So far:
Slow to initially connect
Very slow to view new posts
Not too bad to type a reply
Timed out with IPS Driver error on preview/post
Then quite quick again briefly to get here

The speed seems to be going up and down like a fiddlers elbow

. Nice and quick in the wee hours of this morning, while most of you were having smutty dreams

, but I'm getting timed out/IPS driver error, etc, now. Appallingly poor service from Invision.

If posts are dropping it could be detrimental to the site - as people find other forums to lurk on.
Do you have any access to SSH etc, to see if it's a bandwidth issue or a server load issue. Then if it is server load, you could see which processes are thrashing it?

Trev and Geoff do the
really technical stuff. You know - when you can't understand what they are on about

. Apart from the message from them that I copied in the other thread about this, there has once again been deathly silience.

This probably is a completely unrelated problem - but I got an email today telling me I had a PM - when I read it properly it said the message was sent on the 5th Nov - now that is slow!!
geoffbeaumont
Nov 8 2008, 05:38 PM
As Les says, Trev and I are actively prodding things and sucking through our teethworking on the problem. At the moment we don't know what's causing it, although the server having a rather full system drive as Invision have configured it to dump backups in / probably isn't helping... That's beeing changed, and if the problems persist we'll carry on looking for more things that might be less than perfect.
We do have quite a large database now, but it shouldn't be large enough to cause serious problems on the server hardware we have.

The speed of download varies ,somedays its instant , others seem to take so long I usualy skip this forum in favour of other faster working ones .But once on here it all seems to work ok .
Its slower than the dial up we had years ago back in the dark ages .

I run a wireless ISP here in Ireland and have a very fast connection (12mb both up and down) but I get lots of time outs using this forum but it always comes back after a few mins. Don't have this problem on any other sites, I would talk to the hosting company or find another one.
I agree with others on here if its a new user that finds this site in Google and after they click on the link they get a time out, they might not come back, it also make the forum look bad.
Is it a funding issue and the forum can not afford a good hosting company or is it that the hosting company are getting paid good money for a bad service. I have been thinking about making a donation to the forum as I know these thing don't come for free but then hold back because I don't want to waste my money.
I find the forum very useful and would be willing to make a small donation to help pay for the cost of running it but don't want to send my money if it's just going to be wasted because the hosting company might be ripping off the forum and the users. I'm sure that there are others here that feel the same as me and are just a little unsure about sending a donation.
Don't get me wrong, I find this forum a big help and want to be part of it but find it frustrating that it keeps going down for a few mins several times an hour.

The second one of the two. We pay a fair amount for a dedicated server from Invision and it should be more than up to the job but there seems to be little progress with sorting the problem out. The mod/admin team are not at all happy with this and if it does not improve pretty darned sharpish I would be in favour of moving it elsewhere though I am sure that will unfortunately come with a cost penalty

I must be lucky in my timing too.
I'm an admin on another forum that is this same Invision board - it has a few less posts and members but perhaps more online activity.
I think we have it hosted with
http://www.visn.co.uk/Very good and stable set up - though we do rely on donations and an OEM parts suppliers sponsorship. Forum still feels independent its just that members get a discount.

Many small changes (and some bigger ones) are being made in an attempt to improve things and we have just now up'd the logging on the sql db to gain a bit more knowledge of what is going on there.
It is proving difficult to track down as the 'slow' periods are VERY slow but quite intermittent. I've got monitoring going and it will run for hours with 1sec page load times and then once in a while, yuck

So, I guess two messages,
1) we (and I include Invision in that) are working to pin this down and
2) if you are having trouble please post up here (ideally including time and your location/isp) as right now all info is welcome.

Hello,
You no doubt saw a slowdown right now.. That was my fault.. I should have switched the forum offline while I ran some maintenance queries there.. Didn't think it would affect it as much as it did.. But the logs are showing some problems with searching, and fulltext is enabled on your site.. So, I rebuilt the FullText indexes.. And that really bogged things down more than I expected. 300k posts, I didn't expect it to take longer than 30 seconds or so, and it wound up taking about 2 minutes.. probably due to the activity on the forum.

Seriously the forums speed has been much in debate between the A&Ms, Trev and Geoff at least understand this stuff, and invision now seem to be trying to help, its desperately annoying when the speed drops to something like throwing a stick for a dead dog to fetch, but if we move elsewhere we may be premature and get a worse service. Just try to bear with us, it annoys us all - not that that is a great reassurance

The problem with software is that it all works fine when testing. It's only when you let the users get hold of it that you have problems. They all expect it to be lightning fast with 100 users even though you only tested it with 3 users.
