dumping the 205's on the 90. want larger tyres to UP the gearing and be a good alrounder especially on the road and on grass etc.
Where's the best place, cheapest! to get a set localish?
Is my size,make selection OK?

That size is roughly 35" and will need pretty major mods to the bodywork, will kill your gearing, will cause your axles internals to self destruct and will be a unsatisfactory fit on the wolf rims. Why not go for 265/75 16 or 235/85 16 which are around the 31" mark and will be a good compromise for gearing/performance without any major drawbacks

go for 235/85r16 or even better for a extra 1 inch under the diffs -- 255/85's. both will fit XD/Wolf rims no probs.

i'm guessing he actually means 285/75 r16, which is about 33" and fine on a defender. might need to trim the arches at the edges slightly but fits on with no lift.
they will look a bit pinched on a 6.5" wide wolf rim, but 50000km touring south america by these guys
http://www.ihana.com/ suggests that they will be ok.
i run that size on 7" rims and have not encountered any problems.
with wolf rims, you will lose lock by fitting wider tyres without th offset offfered by aftermarket wheels.

I got some in 265/75 R16 BF Muds on black modulars from devon for a very reasonable price. Im not sure they do em in the size you want though.

the XD/Wolf rims have most of the extra width on the outside of the centre 'nave' plate, so steering lock shouldn't be affected to much.

i have a set of 265/75 16s on eight spokes on my 90, the look a bit pinched in though to be honest. gearing is alot better though. if its better gearing you are after why not it a disco transfer box?

Ok think i hit the wrong buttons. i was thinking the same as steveG
will 255/85/16 kill the gearing on road for the td5?

my 110 runs these on the 1.410:1 transfer box & it's fine a Td5 shouldn't have any problem with more torque/bhp than my 200Tdi, I still pulls well when the overdrive is engaged too

Nope, that extra 10% over standard 205's makes it great on road in my opinion. In standard trim I think TD5 Defenders are slightly undergeared, so putting on the 255's makes it good for main A roads and motorways.
I had a stage 1 remap last weekend by Ian (Porny) at IRB last weekend and it's even better now
Cheers
