If this fails, has anybody got a defender 200tdi engine for cheap, need to sort this one mega soon ( the forum peaks outing depends on it!!!! sad.gif)
Thanks

there isn't a 'rebuild' kit as such, the parts you need will depend on what's wrong with the engine. you'll have to remove inspect each component in turn to decide if it needs replacement.

You can buy a head set, which is every gasket, O-ring, seal, sealing washers for completely dismantling the head. There's not much more for the block assembly - a few gaskets, seals, and RTV sealant. If you are going to completely strip the engine, then it's worth replacing the main and big end shells, regrinding the valves, etc.

Hi Grant,

What part/s need rebuilt? and what makes you think it needs rebuilt?

If its bottom end and top end its more than you would think, a "proper" gasket set/s, head gasket will set you around £120 or a paddocks special for about £50, plus rings and shells if needed plus the time to do it. A good rear crank seal is £20 alone. If i remember correctly it has set me back about £300/400 pounds to rebuild and that isnt including what I paid for the engine (having rebuilt petrol engines a long time ago I thought it would be about £150 all in.....how wrong was I.... blush.gif ).

If its just top end (cam shaft/head gasket) then its not too much of a problem but if the bottom end needs done then the engine has to come out.

There is a lot of time involved to do it correctly, checking the bores and tolerances of crankshaft/camshaft and if you are an experienced mechanic then you could do it in a day or so but if it were me I would need to take a few days off work.

For a minimal costing you could get a price online from Paddocks/Craddocks for a bottom end gasket set, top end gasket set, a set of standard standard rings (just for cost only mind, you cant tell until they are off and checked ), a set of rings (again cost only) and a set of head bolts. Buying a good quality Elring set (thats what they come badged as direct from Bearmach) will cost you a lot more but good quality (incidently you can get elring sets from Dingbro).

My advice if you are going to do it is either do it right and take your time or buy a good second hand running lump with known history (for a vehicle in constant use and no alternative it would be my prefererred option).

My best advice is take someone with you at the prospective purchase who really does know what they are looking at!!!

I hope this helps, I dont want to dampen your enthusiasm just trying to prevent you from either doing something twice or buying a something you might regret.

All the best

hello fellas,
Grant very kindly put this up for me, My defender went for its mot and got really badly treated, It caused over a thousand pounds worth of damage, The chassis and engine were very good and im not just saying that, They smashed holes in the chassis and turrets with a hammer and have messed all my electrics up after they had finished the work.
It passed the brake test but they failed it because he didnt like the feel of the pedal, The braking system has been rebuilt last month and tested by another garage who said it was perfect before going for its mot, The emissions were never a problem and it flew through although they tested it twice even though it passed first time!

They told me they changed the oil and had problems fitting the oil filter and that when they ran it first time the oil pumped out all over the floor, Telling me they ran it dry of oil!
When I took it home the engine has developed a clacking sound and is gradually getting worse, Thats why i asked grant to ask how much a rebuild kit is sad.gif

They have ruined my poor landy. On one more note I lost access to a computer in the summer when my wife and I seperated and I would like to say I do miss you all on here and I was really looking forward to seeing you next weekend in the peaks, I am gutted I wont be able to go as i have been looking forward to it all year. But with the engine being poorly I cant risk it, Im also out of work and cant ask my father for more money for a new engine as he just payed the money to get it fixed so i could go to the peaks, So thats why i got grant to ask about a rebuild kit.

I do hope all are well

Kindest regards to all
