hi guys dummy here( yet again!)
i have a 1996 defender 90,which up untill recently, i thought it was a 300tdi with an r380 transmission.
but when i had some transmission issues! and took it to peices-i found an lt77 box!!!!?
whats going on lol is this normal or has my vehicle had an engine or a gearbox replaced it has done 203k!

cheers guys(again!)

if the engine has a vee belt to drive the water pump/alternator/power steering then it's a 200Tdi, if the turbo is above the manifolds it's a Defender spec 200Tdi, if it's below the manifolds and has a multi groove drive belt on the water pump/alternator it's a 300Tdi.

Jack, what position was reverse in on the gear stick ? To the left of first and forward is LT77 and straight back from 5th is R380. That should tell you what you have.
Easiest way to tell the engine is that the 200 has a "V" belt on the front whereas the 300 has a wide flat ribbed serpentine belt.

no v belt, and turbo is below manifold.
was this engine and gearbox combo(300tdi and lt77) a common occurance?

thanks

I concure with my fellow members above, defo a 300Tdi/R380 combination, so all standard fit in a '96 vehicle.

it looks like an lt77

a long shaft R380 to me, in this pic on the gearbox right hand side [opposite where i've marked] is the serail number if it's a r380 it'll start with 56A******, if it's a LT77 it'll start with 50A*******

Jack, regarding the transfer box, it really does depend on what you are using the 90 for. If lots and lots of motorway miles then, yes it would be worth it but otherwise you may find the gearing a bit too high for town/country use especially if you want to fit larger tyres at sometime in the future.

running 35s i would stick with a 1.4 box unless you like changing clutches alot and have a heavily tweaked motor
