My Defender is working fine just now but I've had this a few times and wondered if any one else has had it or even better knows a cure.

I turn the key, the normal lights come on but the engine does not turn over, I can try it a hundred time and nothing, a bump start gets it going fine but as soon as I turn of the ignition its dead again.

It sorts its self out but normaly takes a few hours or over night, if it was the starter or solanoid I think it would happen fairly often but I only get this about once a year at most.

Do a search on the forum as this has been covered lots of times. Check all the connections to your starter circuit and the earths. It's probably a duff connection somewhere.

It could be anything from the ignition switch onwards. A 12v test light would be worth it's weight in gold to locate this type of problem.

I have one so will have it in the cab and the diagram for next time, I suppose its just a matter of logical elimination, thanks all for your replies.

Get rid of the spider. It serves no useful purpose anyway except to stop you starting the engine sometimes. Otherwise all your mucking about with multimeters and wiring diagrams will get you nowhere.

I agree with Jim it sounds like the spider (imobilizer pack) it contains two relays one for the fuel solinoid and one for the starter. They are easy to fined on a defender but not going to say where for obvious reasons and easy to repair as most of the time its a dry solder joint.

My dads Rreg 300Tdi had the same problem but the other way around it would crank and crank but wouldn't start or it would cut out down the M-way. Openend it solderd it put it back together and never had a problem cince.

Mark\Jim, thanks for the help guys, I removed the spider circuit board and re soldered the contacts that looked like they were failing and all of the contacts from the multi way plug that connects it to the loom, I noticed a difference right away, I used to get a half second delay before the starter engaged, that has gone now so I suspect its been hanging by a thread and only letting me down occasionaly.

Thanks again for all of your replies, another good repair.
