Well; I hope I am posting this in the section that will get the most input.

I just purchased a 1990 RRC chassis, in preparation to build a Tomcat. I have narrowed down the ones I like to the 88" or the 100". I don't really like the looks or the reasons behind the 106" for my intended use. The 80" is too short for what I want, and te 93" is for the D90 chassis.

Can owners, or those with the knowledge give me some Pros / Cons and opinions on the ToCat 8and TomCat 100, please. I would like to pick one over the other based on the issues/mistakes/knowledge of tose before me.

it's purely down to personal preferance mines 100" and a friend (perv) is 88". what use are you intending as that makes a big differance

as mike said, it depends what you are using it for. 88 is a great allrounder (what i have) but 100 woul be best for racing style events.

I personally think that 100" is probably the best compromise, giving best storage/loadspace, ramp breakover angle and propshaft angles.

It will just be used as an off-roader over here in the states. No competition use. My DII is too expensive to break all of the time, so has been relegated to Recon work, and trailblazing. My Series is more of a mud-bogger design. Really tall, parabolics, SOA, 35"'s. I am looking for something I can get a heck of a lot of axle articulation out of, while still keeping the CoG as low as possible. Also, whereas I kept the series "pure" by keeping a 4 pot; the TomCat will be powered by the 4.0 I took out of my DII, when I did the 4.6 conversion. So a V8 with carburetor conversion, and hopefully a manual transmission if I can source one.

A lot of the challenge boy's here stretch their 90ties to 100" to gain more stability. On steep downhills and uphill the extra 12" over the 88 will definitly be an advantage.

from what your saying your use is the same as mine(though mine is my daily driver as well blink.gif ) in which case i would say 100" is easyer to live with day to day trust me i know ph34r.gif . it's less harsh on props and running gear plus slightly more storage etc.

You're a sick man.

I'd build 100" just because that's the chassis you've got and it'll be much easier. Although that being said, I wouldn't bother building a Tomcat at all especially if I was in the states with the availability of proper toys. For the price of importing a kit (if that's the plan) you could do so much better.

So it looks like the 100" would be the way to go. Thanks guys.

Keeps me from having to cut, weld, strengthen the existing frame. That saves time.

And on to planning the next step, lol.

The 88in Tomcat exists for one reason and one reason only. To comply with the Association of Rover Club's regs on wheelbase for competition use. Since you're in the US there would be no practical reason to build an 88in.

And remember whatever you build - forget the budget you have in mind!

LOL!!! Thanks! I learned long ago that Rovers are like women. Just don 't ask. Just order what they want; and always get the best. A happy rover is a faithful rover. Or was that for women...
