Finally committed to oil burning (though my 4.6 is in the shed just in case I dont like it. After I've collected it I can start! Someone did mention I would get the best out of it with the disco ratio high transfers, will have to research this - bit scared of gearboxes!

My 2.8 td zoo zoo pulls very well with the gearing it has. It weighs 1900kg so is heavy. If I were putting the engine in a Landy (which I may) I would use the disco 1.22 Transfer Box as that is slightly higher than the zoo zoo and with the landy weighing less I think that it would suit very well.
If you go 1.4 defender it would be too low, first would be useless and you would be topping out at about 75 flat out screaming (4000rpm approx) with a diesel engine.
Diesels like to pull and mine goes very well pulling easily from 30 in 4th with loads of power so don't be afraid of upping the gearing as with the lighter land rover it will be very economical and go like stink.
I tow with mine and the gearing isn't too high.
Hope to have been of some help smile.gif

I have run a 2.8 Isuzu in my 110 SW for 4 years and never regretted the change, superb economy, pulls like a train even with a 90 and loads on the Ifor Williams. Spares are easy but rarely needed a really good conversion.

Is the 4.6 up for sale any time soon?

Disagree!! My zoo zoo, went on a 1.4 t.box, 1st was usable, not necessary but usable, and it would pull 90 down an incline, had it up to 100 on the clock once down same incline chasing a ford thing, but Igot the willies when the doors started shaking, BUT I still remember the WHITES OF HIS EYES in the rear view mirror as I was right up his chuff! These engines rev freely and higher than 4000 rpm. If you go with a 1.22 t .box you'll lose that terrific accelleration this has. Mine didnt have an intercooler either, but M Burgins put it in an tweaked the pump a TAD!

What gearboxes are most of you running?
I'm in the process of fitting an oil burner into my 90 and I'm confident I'l like it but worried about spares.
Mines a Nissan 3.5 Turbo and looks quite similar to the 3.9 Zoo zoo which I'd love to get my hands on but I'm fitting it to my Santana Box.
Been thinking if it goes tits up I'l get me one of those 2.8's but not sure what you all have them mated to.
Just a small sidetrack! ph34r.gif

It's still in an MOT (Chassis) failure B reg 110, on stromberg carbs with an lpg conversion (100l tank), I reckon the rest of the vehicle has done in excess of 160 000 miles. Gearbox is ok but thrust bearing is noisey. Someone has shown interest but he may want to send it to Africa.

Is this a for sale advert???

My plan was to put 265 tyres on, this is a wee tad bigger than the ones I'm running so may not need gears after all? I'll get lump fitted and running first then do tyres and intercooler later.

great stuff, im looking to do the same except using the 3.1 isuzu engine as its more readily available.

are you planning on using a conversion kit like milner or something ?

Im gonna jump on the band wagon here as well.

Just received a 2.8 turbo isuzu lump complete with a conversion plate, ZF Auto box and LT230. Not sure of the LT ratio's on this one but have a 1:1.67 and a 1:1.4 transfer boxes sitting in the yard at work so can play about with ratio's.

Mine's going into a 127" rapier based campervan to replace a 200tdi and LT77.

I also happen to have a brand new 07 VW Crafter turbo & intercooler set-up which may find their way onto the engine.

Looking forward to the build progress reports as I'm a couple of months off getting stuck in yet!

in regards to turbo on the 2.8 you can fit the bigger 3.1 turbo with minor modifications.

check out the isuzu trooper owners club forum > http://www.itocuk.co.uk/

handy for trooper conversions.

It goes without saying of course that lots of pichers are obligatory. smile.gif
I take it we're talking a variable inlet turbo here are we?

I think it's already got the plate fitted mated to the same box as I've got so, being bone idle I wanted to drop mated engine and box in in one go.

Looked at intercoolers and volvo's seems to be a reasonable size so may go that way cheap too on eBay.

Off to collect it this weekend hopefully, hadnt realised that the 4J engine had been produced in such huge numbers also used as an industrial engine for access platforms etc. 10 million dotted around (ish)
