Waht do you all think?

Chris

Very nice indeed Chris - looks absolutely cracking!

Paint looks real smooth too - what's the spec for the tube / paint?

Something a little different, like it.

Not usually keen with exo cages but that actually looks pretty cool and very nicely fabbed. I can see the pads on the outside but some pics of the inner hoop and hwo the two are attached would be nice (please) and cage to rock slider mounts.

How easy is it to get the tilt off and back on again?

Pics 3 and 4 you can see the feet they are 10mm x 45mm x 125mm bolted with 12mm 12.9 cap heads and nylocks, sorry no pics of inside.
The plates on the side go through to an internal hoop which is mounted on the side of the tub AND to the chassis via a cross dia and 2 rear stays.

Chris
LR90
Thanks, that helps. So is the internal hoop a new fab or a customised mil hoop with new back and floor stays. (Sorry but with a rag top myself I'm really interrested in how you've done this).

Mil hoop INSIDE with T45 rear stays and dia.The canvas can be pulled out from behind the plate by taking the bolts out i never roll the side up anyway.

Nah we are not that mean laugh.gif

Lovely craftsmanship. Like the CDS, love the tube fillets.
Why three tubes running lengthways though ?
Just for looks or to protect the soft-top ?

The 3 bars are to help in the event of it going over to stop anything pushing through into the cab area.Even though we are going to be wearing helmets this year.

Absolutely no way. ohmy.gif

The quality of the work looks top notch, as does the design, welding and general finish.

I also don't 'like' the hoops on the outside, yet they are FAR more practical, .......and just cos I don't like the style of something ....or the tube OD etc .......doesn't mean I can't see through it to the quality and time obviously taken for a top job, ...........and cage work is an absolute PITFA........ period !

Prob the nicest exo I have seen in a long time................. biggrin.gif

I posted the same pics on the devon 4x4 forum and got loads of smart arse remarks!!!! IT JUST SHOWS THE DIFFERANCE BETWEEN THE FORUMS.
I would love to build something like out of this world but at the mo time is the limiting factor which is frustraing with have ALL the tools to hand to put together a real good one off.

I see you went for a halo style hoop, don't see many like that this side of the pond.

If I had the top of my cage like that I would not of had the headache I ended up with.

Very tidy.

Yummy!

Are you going to add a chassis mounted type (front hoop) also to the list?
For those who don't want to use side bars?

Yep it wouldnt be a problem,if anyone wants a cage to WHATERVER spec they like it can be done.

Personally I think this talk of T45 and CDS is modernism for no other reason than out of commercial interest.. you cant beat a bit of green oak, eco friendly and easy to work, for rally cars teak is a good lightweight substitute.

I am currently growing a nice bramble bull bar - this should counter any arguements that Land Rover motor cars arent green.

Progress is futile

Very nice, good work, nice pictures, really like the fact that it's not the run-of-the-mill shape too, particularly the front above the windscreen, not just the usual up across and down hoop for a Defender.

Hi chris,

Very very nice, envious of the time, skill and effort that has gone in to it. Two things though,

It might be a trick of the photos but there doesn't seem to be that much protection for the tops of the doors, ie when your leaning on trees.

And personally the front of the cage doesn't look stong enough, though it might just be me being used to seeing a "proper" front hoop.

All the same though damned nice looking piece of kit.

The pics dont show that well how the cage runs along the door tops.

Chris,

Not at all.

[rant mode selected warp factor 9 laugh.gif ]

Wot REALLY P****s me off F BIG * time is when muppets come up to me at events, and then say

"Is that your 90 / (or in the past) Hybrid ?"

"Yeah" huh.gif

"yeah...nice.....but when I do mine I think I do X this way or that way cos it will be better"

Apart from instantly in mind then branding themselves as a know-it-all-pratt the sader fact is most of these muppets drive a HOS, or better still F all and have no fabrication skill, no idea, little knowledge, an apart from a big ego F all hope of ever doing anything.

I have been known to bait these cretins...

"Which is you 4x4 then ?"...

"How many Hybrids / cages / Xs have you built then"

"How do you find the best way to anneal metals ?"

most then have a

"Er um" answer

But my absoute favorite is

"Why don't you **** off you irritating knowitall little T*** ******* like you get on my *i**" .......normally does it tongue.gif

[rant mode off and breath in and calm laugh.gif ]

The ones who have ever done anything close to the mods / build a 4x4 always say nice, built in just the weekend / week month then grin laugh and you know they KNOW laugh.gif

So, chris, after you biult the cage, what did you do for the rest of the day laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif ?

Would you consider doing a cage for a 110 truck cab?

Chris, LOVELY JOB!!!! There are only a few people out there (and even fewer businesses) that build really good cages. What really pi$$es me off about a lot of cages out there is creating an external cage that doesn't follow the lines of the bodywork (particularly on bends). WHY???? It just looks wrong! Yours is a nice design that looks a bit differant. My experience with tube is limitied but for an A level I built a go-kart and the tubework for the chassis drove me insane. I reccon it took me 40 hours to get it right! The only question I have is why didn't you go for diagonals over the roof rather than straight bars?

1. Yes

2. Yes

3. Yes, but I made a small error in the steering setup which made the handling somewhat interesting..... unsure.gif

4. Err, not one of my best bits of fabrication but it was done in a couple of hours.....

Ye great looking cage mate, looks superb. I saw it on devon 4x4 forum and thought it got some tough critiscism. Dont know why though. unsure.gif

Very nice looking cage Chris. Sounds like you're going to get VERY busy pretty soon! I hadn't forgotten about bringing my cage in to you by the way - I just haven't got round to removing it from the donor vehicle yet...you know how things are!! rolleyes.gif

Looks good northern. Would you offer a cage in kit form? are you doing cages etc exclusively for LR's?
