I reciently bought a genuine hi-lift jack for a fiver because it did not work

upon investigation the pins seem very worn so i ground off the lip and it now works however i dont really trust it at the moment

anyone know if it is common for the pins to wear and were can i get replacements?

You can get rebuild kits with new pins, springs etc. IIRc cost is about £10 or so, both the 'addocks sell teh kits.
